Is there any news about 5 elephants injuring a PH and killing hunter? Thanks

There was. I believe it was removed becuse eco terrorists were harrassing the hunters family.

We discussed this horrible tragedy over the weekend. It’s been discussed on this forum as well as other sites. As was mentioned by another member, the information was removed from here out of consideration to the hunter’s family as word got out that anti-hunters were causing problems with news. They’re in everyone’s thoughts and prayers, at least from this group; certainly not the evil people who celebrate when bad things happen to hunters.

Thanks for this info. Greatly appreciated. What I’ve learned it was a terrible situation and it appears these elephants had one thing on their minds. I suppose if firearm laws in Gabon were different this might have turned out differently.
My friend died doing what he most loved to do and I’m certain he’s in a happy place

It is a tragic story; a man is dead, but we don't know what exactly happened, and this kind of thing can also happen in other African countries. Nevertheless, it is sure that you have to be extremely careful when hunting in African countries where hunting is not comparable to what most people in southern Africa are familiar with. In some countries there is no backup, and you are on your own in dangerous situations.

The matter hasn't yet reached the local level. No information has leaked out, and I only know about it through the document Collect Africa released.

To my knowledge, it must be over 60 years since a white person was killed by an elephant. But villagers are regularly killed or attacked by elephants while going to their plantations or checking their traps.
It's important to know that these small forest elephants are extremely aggressive, especially the females when they have calves. You need to know the forest. But you also sometimes come across an animal that has been wounded by a hunter (recently or not) and for whom the scent of humans reignites old resentments.
They are fully protected unless they cause damage to the plantations. Firearms legislation is not involved. I own four rifles and a 12-gauge shotgun, all registered and taxed for the past 42 years. The issue at hand is the hunting rights of non-resident foreigners, for whom it is prohibited unless the legislation has changed in recent weeks.

Very respectful article online today on this unfortunate tragedy at foxnews.com. Continued thoughts and prayers to the decedent’s family and friends.

We ran into extremely fresh forest elephant tracks while duiker hunting in Southeast Cameroon two years ago. Luckily, no problems because we only had a 12 gauge shotgun with buckshot. On the other hunts for big game, we carried at least one .375 H&H and the PH often had his .416 as backup.

You never really think about the possibilities until they happen, I guess. Happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

There have been several white PHs killed by elephants in the last few years, as well as guys guiding tours in southern Africa. IDK about Gabon

I see one of the major news outlets has run a story with Ernie's full name. Tragic that the family is being harassed. My daughter and I run a taxidermy business and occasionally some arse posts some anti bullshit on her Facebook page. We just blow it off. Ours is a "bloody" business. But nature is brutal. Sometimes even I have trouble reconciling, especially as I near my own last roundup. It is what it is. They are entitled to their opinion and I respect that ... if they can be respectful in expressing it.

I missed this story last week.

Obviously the first thing to say is condolences to this individuals family and friends, once again this shows the risks that hunters, PH's and staff face.

This story featured in yesterday's Daily Telegraph, a reasonably balanced article, but sadly in the comments section, the hatred, vitriol and pure spite was shocking! The comments section was shortly disabled. Hence I didn't want to share a thumbnail of the article.

Let's hope there is plenty of support for the man's immediate family and his friends, very best wishes, I know the AH community will wish them well.

I for one would like to know what exactly happened, what could have been done to prevent such occurrences . I hear the PH was injured, was he adequately armed ? I’m sure they were aware of elephants around the forest. Unfortunate things happen and it could be just a coincidence or sheer bad luck

I read somewhere that the poor gentleman was forced by law to use a shotgun on duiker, when those five elephants attacked.

His name is all over the internet now. I don’t do social media but the wife does and she said it’s all negative nasty comments.
A buddy of mine got into it pretty good with a group of them online told them you believe in Darwin? They said yes, he said then any animal that needs humans to stay around is defying nature and if survival of the fittest is real then they should go extinct. Of course he’s just trying to irritate them but it worked
