Gabon elephant kills hunter

With true heartfelt condolence and all due respect to his family and friends .
I say lucky him , died with his boots on like a true adventurer not some slow painful death in a hospital or hospice . I tip my beer to this man.

This has been a terrible year for hunting deaths and the year isn't even half over.....tragic.

I feel like there was a high number of buffalo incidents last year. I can think of several deaths and I'm sure there are a few I haven't heard of.

I'm probably not in the loop but actually haven't heard as many this year other than this one in Gabon, which is a terrible tragedy.

If that’s true then it’s another example of government ruining lives
At the risk of repeating myself: once and for all, consider this hunt illegal. Importing weapons is prohibited in Gabon. Therefore, you cannot justify arriving at the airport with a weapon as a non-resident foreigner. The organizer may have provided locally available weapons borrowed or rented from a local hunter. And that is why, I think, the guide was equipped with a rifle.

A man died by hunting; it is tragic, there is no question about that.

Nevertheless, one should be careful when assessing what actually happened. It also remains very unclear to me how a foreigner could go hunting in Gabon. Unfortunately, in many African countries a lot is often possible behind the backs of the authorities. Anyone hunting in countries where hunts are not normally organized for foreigners must be very cautious. The fact that an agent in a foreign country organize such hunts is not an absolute guarantee that they are absolutely legal. No French hunting outfitters currently lists Gabon in their program.

10-4 I was unaware that it’s illegal to hunt there. I thought he just couldn’t hunt with a rifle

I don't know whether the hunt was illegal or not. Hunting appears to be generally permitted in Gabon, provided one holds a hunting license and is authorized to carry a firearm. But to what extent this all is possible for non resident foreigners, is unclear to me. I was not able to determine this exactly from the few official texts from Gabon that I can found and read on the Net. It remains strange why no agents can be found for such hunts in France.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
