I needed to sell my 404Jeff to pay a few bills and while it kind of left me with a ton of regret I decided to own another as soon as my finances got better.
My old set up was done by Triple River using a donor CZ550 375HH so I figured I would use the same set-up for the new build. Unfortunately with CZ dropping the 550, prices and availability came at premium so I decided to see if a Winchester would do the job.My local Gunsmith assured me a 404 on a Win. action would do the job just fine so I stated a hunt for a donor ( the Sows Ear).
I told the Gunsmith I wanted an old school Safari rifle right down to the gloss black bluing along with the barrel band, Safari sights etc. I had a Winchester LA stock the I bought years ago off E bay on a whim and wanted a Mercury reducer installed to help with recoil. Twelve weeks later this is what I picked up form Jim Coby Gunsmith here in Minnesota. The Sows Ear, then the Silk Purse

WOW.

Congrats good sir. That is a fabulous looking creation. Every part of it looks sexy to me. Next step is obviously replacing your background plaid (sow's ear) with some manner of background game animal (silk purse).

Not trying to be an ass, but Jim's last name is spelled Kobe. He is an excellent gun builder and you made a wise choice using his services.
My mistake, This is the second time Ive used Jim.

Turned out great!

Does that rear base ever get in the way of “expedited” loading?
No it does not, I,m more worried about the mount holding up to the 404

WOW that turned out really well.

That looks great, Rob. Curious, did your model 70 start life as a 375 or one of the RUM cartridges?

It started out as a 375HH it was easier to find than a Rum on the used market

That came out fantastic.

Thanks I like it, I,ll post a range report soon

First range trip. I had a hell of a time getting the Jeff on paper, turned out to be a a bad ring. this group is a 100yds using Norma brass and a 400g Barnes Solid with 84gs of Win 760.Last week I changed powders to VIV 550 with a charge of 78gr with the same bullet and this was the result with a minimum load, seems the 550 is a bit hotter

Since it grouped so well with the Win 760 I'm going to jump the load a bit and see what happens

Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
