For Sale As New Blaser R8 .375 H&H Standard Barrel With Iron Sights & Magazine Insert $999

Yes. I saw that very stock receiver for sale on GB myself. It was definitely a good deal. Not sure what you paid for it, but last I saw it was at $1650.00 or so.
I bought it for $1,950.

That’s interesting, up until now I was not aware the 1750 exceeded the standard luggage limit. I've only flown it a few times within Australia and few times between Europe and Oz and the dimensions were never questioned. There was always so much excitement amongst the airport staff that the focus must have been on other things.
The rule is not new, but for years the airlines generally ignored it.

Actually there are two rules: max weight 50 lbs. and max linear dimensions (width + length + depth) 62".

Starting a few years ago, airlines started checking luggage weight systematically for international flights between USA and Europe/Africa. They now quasi-systematically charge an over-weight fee if a luggage is over 50 lbs. although some AH members continue to report being occasionally able to "sweet talk" their way out of it... The Pelican 1750 with foam is heavy (25.5 lbs.) but generally safari clients have been able to keep it under 50 lbs. with a scoped PG rifle and a DG rifle, although not by a very wide margin...
It is one of the Pelican 1700 advantages for those with take-down rifles: it is significantly lighter at 17 lbs. with foam.

For the first time in 2019, safari clients started reporting being charged an over-sized fee. Sadly, the Pelican 1750 that is one of the most common rifle cases with safari clients exceeds the 62" allowed with dimensions 53" + 16" + 6.12" = 75.12".
It is one of the Pelican 1700 advantages for those with take-down rifles: it is significantly smaller
at 38.1" + 16" + 6.1" = 60.2".

In truth, the main reason why I purchased a Blaser R8 was that I wanted to be able to go to Africa with 3 calibers in one rifle case less than 62" linear and 50 lbs. To the best of my knowledge, the combo Blaser R8 (or similar) and Pelican 1700 (or similar) is the only option...

The last consideration to note is that some airlines increase or waive these requirements for business or first class passengers, so safari clients traveling in these classes may never have been confronted with these rules.

Still a good deal. I'm considering buying an aluminum semiweight stock for a 416 Rem Mag barrel I've been quoted by J Sip. With a kickstop in place, and at the weight that J Sip quoted, I should be right around 9lbs bare rifle weight. 10lbs scoped with a Leupold 1-5×20. This should make for a very portable buffalo hammer.

Very nice setup Opposite Pole!
You can hunt anywhere anytime with your selection!

I’ve added a Krieghoff double (470NE & 9.3x74R) to the collection so yes, I’m good for just about anything. If fact it’s hard for me to justify extra firearm purchases - but I don’t let that stop me ;-)

Btw the best way to cut foam for a gun case is to use an electric knife like you would use to a cut a turkey. Makes it super easy and accurate.

Looking back at the pictures, I’m just wondering one thing. How do you close the case without everything falling out of one side? Or am I missing something crucial?

The part with extra barrels seats on top of the rifles and you just close the lid on top of it. If you look at the first image it shows it ready to be closed.

That must be a tough piece of foam in between the two sides. Or else the barrels or scopes would dent or scratch everything on the other side of it, or vise versa.

It’s high density foam. The “barrel holder” has a plastic backing covered with thick layer of felt-like material. The cutouts are very precise and it all seats quite snug. The company that made the foam for me specialises in making this kind of gear for photo/film equipment and fragile science instruments, they certainly knew what they were doing.

P.S. I apologise to OP for derailing his thread.

I gotcha. In that case you have a very nice system. As for the OP....we're not worried about him! He already sold his barrel! Hahaha!

Just commenting on the baggage size and weight issues.

I have used Americase 3-gun safari cases since my first trip to Africa. On Emirates, they do not surcharge for the size, but they do for the weight. The three gun Case with two rifles and shooting sticks gets you just under 50lbs for no-charge in coach. With three guns in hovers under the 70lb limit for no surcharge in business.

Best part, no airline changes from USA to Africa if you’re flying into Harare, Lusaka, or Jo’berg end to end on Emirates. I’m done with switching carriers and dealing with rifle permits for transfer, SAPS, airlink and SAA surcharges, etc. Every airline problem I’ve had has been using two carriers. Past several trips, one carrier, emirates, no problems. Even if I have to pay more to get picked up in Harare rather than Vic or Bulawayo. Still a better deal.
