Does cold weather affect ammunition?

Yes some more than others. Seems to mostly depend on powder. Some powders the difference between 0 or colder and 70 degrees may be 100 FPS or more other powders the difference seem to be negligible.

I agree akhutr. You must know your ballistics. Some powders are affected more than others. But prove it to yourself. Don't always believe what's advertised. There are "extreme powders" that claim very low tolerances that we have tested in cold temps and they too are affected. Grant it if your not shooting over a couple hundred yards, you might not notice. But when you start to stretch things out, it will.make a big difference. My best advice is know your bullet, print cheat sheets if you have too.

I've hunted our local elk at temperatures that ranged between -30°C and +30°C. Temperatures effect on ammunition is a major consideration in my hunting. I trust Norma more than most manufacturers to load ammunition that can consistently deliver precision despite extremes in temperature.

I also agree. Norma has been great and consistent powders.

It would be nice to see some actual results in cold temperature and hot temperature. Can you post some here

I just got some repair parts for my chronograph today. I will try to get out soon while its still somewhat cold here (-15°C) and then again when we have warmer weather in a few months maybe +25°C or so. I'd like to compare a temperature sensitive powder like W748 and one advertised as less sensitive like Varget. And perhaps compare a Winchester and a Norma factory load. I hope to be able to report in a few months!

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
