Can you gentleman tell me if a proper bedding job would have prevented this stock from cracking at the tang? Snapchat-197206534.jpg
CZ 458 Lott, I'd estimate the round count to be no more than 12 since purchase. Thanks

My CZ 458 Lott cracked in same spot. It was bedded, by Wayne at AHR when a No2 make over was done on it. Mine cracked sometime on a safari in 2023 with probably 200 plus round count. Wayne told me when I contacted him that the 458 lott is noted for cracking stocks and I should replace with a Bell and Carlson. Which I did and Wayne walked me thru the steps for fitting and bedding it. Best decision I made, gun shoots better and feels better in that stock.
PM me if you want more info.

Thanks for the reply. I found the crack and pulled the barreled action out of the stock. The bedding job looks like a child did it. I was wondering if workmanship had something to do with it. Glad to have Wayne's back up on this one. Side note I was at his shop and had a look at one of your rifles a few years ago. Want to say it was a 7mm.

There should be some clearance around the tang point of the action to prevent it cracking in this location. From the photo there does not appear to be sufficient clearance. That is assuming the recoil lug has been correctly bedded. How has the recoil lug been bedded?

I snapped a few pics before I put her back in the stock. I don't have a direct picture

Not the best job I have seen, do you know what material they used?
Certainly a synthetic stock is not likely to crack, but from my point of view they are dead ugly. Stable, robust, durable but no soul.
There have been a huge number of heavy recoiling guns with beautiful walnut stocks that have not and will not crack, as they have been bedded correctly and have clearance at the tang screw point.

My CZ 458 win got the exact same crack after probably 50 rounds. I didn't want to worry about it so I just went ahead and ordered a nice exhibition grade stock for it and I'm having it properly finished, bedded, and installed by someone much more competent at that kind of task than I am and it's supposed to be done sometime later this month.

Do you mind passing that contact info/ web site along? We can pm if you prefer? Thanks

I got the exhibition grade bastogne walnut stock from here:
They come 90 percent finished. The guy doing the fit and finish work is someone a friend recommended but he just does it on the side occasionally. He doesn't have a website or anything like that. Hes a young guy that lives in San Angelo, Texas. If you still want his number I could message you that.

I'll have a look at the stocks first. Appreciate your time.

Not mine but from a member on another forum who does custom rifles and bedding jobs. This is the work of a pro.

Beautiful job on thoes rifles. My other CZ's are done properly by AHR...

The Purdey Chassis System

Embedded in the rifle’s handmade walnut stock is a CAD-engineered and CNC-machined titanium chassis that runs all the way from the pistol grip through to the front of the fore-end. This very clever bit of engineering negates all of the challenges posed by traditional walnut stocks by providing an exceptionally stable bedding platform into which the action is built.

This major advance has also allowed Purdey to incorporate a true free-floating barrel into the design, allowing consistent barrel harmonics which, as any rifle or barrel maker will tell you, is another key prerequisite to rifle accuracy.

Innovation meets tradition

I'd start over. That's the worst bedding job I've ever seen.

I guess cracked stocks are a problem for the best of them here's the new H&H takedown they also are addressing cracked stocks as well as accuracy

It was alittle sloppy but I never pulled the action out of the stock till i saw the crack. Had another rifle at this smith and after two years received a box of parts back. I'll be composing an email with pictures this afternoon.

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
