Case Trimmer for NE cartridges

I have been using a Lyman case trimmer that indexes off the shoulder for most of my reloading. It mau not give bench rest precision but is good enough for my hunting loads up to 375 H&H.

However there is no insert for my new 450/400. And certainly not one for larger cartridges I may use in the future.

What are you guys using to trim these cases? Consistent case length is critical when using a crimp die as a small difference in case length varies the crimp and can have a big impact on consistency.

Forster Case Trimmer, call and ask for Ryan, he’ll get you set up. I have a set up for each large bore caliber I load for, set them up where I want them and never have to touch them again. I clamp them in a bench vise and trim cases standing up

Are those manual or is there a way to attach them to a hand drill or the like?

They are manual but I believe you can hook up power. Really no need, when you get going you can do 50 pieces in no time at all. I always chamfer and de-burr by hand as well.

Thanks I just remember the days with my old RCBS manual trimmer. Doing a hundred cars resulted in wrist cramps and a hell of a finger blister from the crank.

Great advice, I’ve looked at something similar once I get my reloading bench set back up

Make sure you get the longer Forster “Classic” case trimmer, not the original case trimmer.

For larger cases, ones requiring magnum length, like 416 Rigby, 458 Lott, and most your long Nitro Express cases, you need the longer “Classic” version.

CH4D file trim dies and a couple good 11" flat bastard mill files, the large Lyman hand deburring tool works very well on 450's up to 577 Nitro.

That seems pretty laborious if doing a hundred cases or so.

Tanks is spot on, Giraud are the bees knees for most cartridges….not sure for all though. @Tanks do you know if they are compatible with 470 and 500 nitro? When I was looking for a trimmer for big bores, there was something that led me away from Giraud and can’t recall what it was now. I love their trimmer and had one that I sold to a bud when I quit doing competitive shooting for a time.

Their website doesn’t list any NE cartridges above the 450/400. But if a gent was stopping double NE cartridges there, the trimmer would prove perfect option. It will handle Jeffery, Rigby, and Lott.

If you go with the simple manual route, even for now, make sure you decide if you are a pre- or post- sizing kind of trimmer. Whichever guy you are will define which size guide you buy for each cartridge.

Meaning, for a 450/400, you’d see a .410 guide listed on their chart. Great…perfect…if you trim before sizing. If you trim after sizing, well, now you’ll have a few thousandths neck tension on that guide and it will not work. There are a lot of guide options where you can get a good guide fit post-sizing, just have to drop down a tiny bit. Like for my 450NE I use a .454 or .452, brass make depending. Think the one I use for the 450/400 is .405. I can double check if you’d like. Just PM me if you elect to go this route. The guides are cheap and easy to swap…easy to drop and lose too…so I buy a few in the sizes I need and a couple sizes per case if using more than one kind of brass.

I only charge 223 and 50BMG on my giraud. Not sure what else they make. Quick trimmer but kindof pain if changing between calibers often. Classic Forster is great for the midsized Nitro's. Hederson for most things for me.

Wilson is my preferred trimmer, trims every caliber I have, from 220 Swift to 577 NE 3” with excellent consistency and ease of use.
