Building a 470 Capstick

I am also building the Capstick with cz550 action, B&C stock (weighted with tungsten) and Douglas 0.475 barrel. Designed the barrel contour (oversized by 31/1000, dual taper) to fit the B&C channel
and stress level. The gentlemen at Douglas use a duplicator for non-std contours, so going to try this out (3D printed):

I use ball powder in my Lott (I do find the Lott recoil sharp) and will use H4895 in the Capstick. But, for the same rifle weight, I do not expect the recoil to be any different, based on this:
Guess I will find out:)

Jeffery404, nice plan.
I made a Pac-Nor No. 6 Sporter contour fit into the B&C "Kevlar"/"Aramid" that came off a CZ-USA factory rifle. Same stock now sells from B&C for about $200 less than CZ-USA used to sell them for.
Gunsmith shortened the Pac-Nor barrel by an inch at the shank end and then cut it at muzzle to 23" length overall.
I sanded out the barrel channel a minor amount and cut into the barrel channel to accommodate a barrel recoil lug at same location as the previous CZ barrel contraption.
The bedding block runs through grip to forend tip.

Here is what the CZ factory bedding looked like before I redid it:

That would be another way to use a Pac-Nor No. 6 Sporter, for a 470 Capstick,
though rifle above is a 500 Mbogo, my No. 2 rifle of two in the world.
It is a .510/470 Mbogo 3-Inch, based on Dave Estergaard's 470 Mbogo.

we have used the the pacnor #5, 6 and douglas #5 but wanted to try this out and have CZ550 magnum barrel contour exact match in the stock channel and what I call "fat" barrel from the forearm to the muzzle of 800/1000 diameter.
We shall see

My first 500 Mbogo had the barrel made by Harry McGowen himself.
He was the guy supplying CZ-USA barrels at the time and so he left a "dog nut" on the barrel for creation of integral rear sight base and recoil lug.
Yes, weird contour, 0.820" muzzle diameter at 25" length but pretty skinny rearward, so I do not call it a "fat" barrel on mine.

Muzzle diameter on 500 Mbogo No. 2 (pictured above) is 0.770" at 23" length,
without scope and rings, it weighs 9#4oz.
With that 30-mm-tubed scope and CZ rings it weighs 10#10oz.

500 Mbogo "Original" (above) weighs 10 lbs and zero ounces in the heavy laminate stock fully glass bedded, pillared, cross-bolted, and grip-rodded, without scope and rings and no ammo onboard.

In the B&C stock it will weigh about same as 500 Mbogo No. 2, about 9-1/4 lbs,
yet with 25" muzzle 0f 0.820" diameter.
Good idea for the front of a CZ sheet metal box, soldered steel reinforcement:

That laminate "Phat American" CZ-USA stock from their factory .416 Rigby weighed 3 lbs 7.1 ounces with all the steel and epoxy I added to it for the 500 Mbogo.
HOLY COW almost 3.5 lbs !!!

A B&C Medalist stock (full bedding block) for the CZ 550 Magnum weighs 2.5 pounds.
A B&C Medalist stock for the Winchester M70 Long Action (H&H length) weighs 2.0 pounds.
Factory walnut stock for either rifle would be in the 2.75 to 3.0 pounds range, in my experience.
Figuring my weights accordingly:

I do have a new B&C stock for 500 Mbogo Original, which will make it weigh only about one ounce over 9 pounds dry/bare/unloaded.

Tim at Matrix Gunsmithing. He is re-tooling up his machine, maybe around end of Nov?
BTW, we are in Kevin Weaver "neck of the woods":)
I may have to give him a call, thanks for the information.

No barrel recoil lug, not necessary with a B&C/endoskeleton stock, eh ?
What is that bracket-looking thing beneath the quarter rib ?

I had cycling problems with my CZ 550 458 WM sent it to Tim at Matrix Gunsmithing for a level one upgrade... WOW what a difference.

Tim is a great guy! Lots of CNC gun parts coming on line with his new machine!
The Douglas duplication did not work even with the .375” linear bearing for support, to much flex!
So they hand turned, great folks there.

Too bad you cannot still get a Sunny Hill-McMillan drop-in combo, drop box and drop-belly stock.
I did that on a .500/.338 Lapua Magnum Improved wildcat.

The factory walnut stock on my 470 Capstick worked quite nicely.

I used the factory barrel sights and had gunsmith put a recoil lug on the barrel and glass bedded throughout, with pillars. No axial rod through the grip but good grain there = no worries.
Only other thing of note was to change the follower and magazine spring to those from a 300 RUM M70 Classic. Loads, feeds, retains and ejects well and a little more room in the box, slicked up by gunsmith.

Barrel contour. My 470 Capstick barrel is sort of a cross between a McGowen No. 6 Light Target with some sporterization instead of a straight taper. Call it a McGowen No. 6 Sporter, even if they do not list it as an option. 0.750" at the 26" muzzle.

I have built several .500 and .510caliber rifles and chose the Pac-Nor No. 6 sporter contour for those.
They are about 0.790" at the 24" muzzle, with a 3"-long cylinder shank before threading of the tenon. I have even had McGowen copy Pac-Nor No. 6 Sporter on their barrels, routine for them.

Pac-Nor No. 6 Sporter Contour would be ideal for a 470 Capstick, just as their No. 5 Sporter Contour is ideal on a .458 WIN MAG.
Calculate your barrel weight here thanks to Pac-Nor:

Where an axial rod through the grip might be inserted, all the way up to the rear pillar, slathered with epoxy:

Just talked to Douglas Barrels and Kevin Weaver, Kevin is going to order a barrel from them for my 470 Capstick. Should be shipped in about six weeks. Here is a pic of the donor rifle, a G series Winchester Mod 70 375 H&H. Also ordered a stock blank from George Caswell at Champlin arms, he's going to pick me out a nice piece of wood that will be appropriate for the 470 capstick.

Nice contour, will save some sanding in the barrel channel !
How long is the cylinder portion at breech end,
and what is the diameter and length to the end of that unthreaded, uncut barrel ?
What barrel length do you plan and what will the muzzle diameter be at that length ?
Please and thanks in advance.

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
