I have a 25-06 and have received a couple of bruised shoulders from it but I was not holding it properly and didn't have it snug into my shoulder when I shot it. But I never did feel it hit.

By the way, mine is a Weatherby Vanguard and while it likes Barnes 115 TTSX's it does a better job with Barnes 100 TTSX at 3200 fps.

Here is the exit hole on a coues deer that I shot at 420 yards with it.

I concede. My neighbor and his boy both shot it today and said it was gentle. Given the truly fantastic bruise on my shoulder I can only conclude that it must have hit me just right on the first shot and the rest of them were just further insult. Just one of those weird things I guess.

You actually got bruised by a .25-06??? Hardly seems possible. Are you on blood thinners?

I have no excuse and thus the frustration. I’m 33, I’m in pretty decent shape, and I have a 375, a 416, and a 470 that I have never complained about. When the first round popped me I was pretty offended. Must have got me just right in an awkward position off of bags. I’m not usually recoil shy but it popped me pretty good.

Haven't owned a #1, but the 25-06 is arguably the best antelope cartridge available. Depending on the twist rate, it may handle the 117/120gr bullets as well as the 100s. I have had a few, all of them have been sub-moa once I found the load they liked. Best results have been with 100grainers in the 3100-3200fps range.
Perfectly capable on game up through mule deer, with fairly mild recoil. In that heavy barrel #1, recoil will certainly be easily manageable.

THE 25/06 is a great cartridge. Tho I have never owned one I like all things 25. My own 25is a bit faster than the 25/06 and is an emphatic killer on deer.
In the 25/06 you can safely load the 100gn TTSX to 3,400fps and the 115gn nosler balistic tip or the 117grain SST should get close on 3,100fps.
I will try and find Nick Harvey's loads for you if you want.
In my 25 I use 117grain SST and 100gn TTSX and both are pure murder on all the game I have shot.
I have loaded up some 115gn nosler combined technology silver tips to try and they should be good as well
Fortunately the loads I have developed all print within an inch of each other out to 300 yards.

Do keep us posted on your range results. You will be pleasantly surprised at how well your rifle shoots. Until you get used to the flat trajectory you will probably over shoot your game, I know I did.

Funny you should say that. I finally got the scope mounted and level and happily went to the range to sight in my new to me Ruger 1 that will be very gentle in the shoulder and will shoot flat as a pancake. It does, in fact, shoot flat as a pancake. It is not, however, gentle in the shoulder. The recoil is sharp and unpleasant and I have not yet decided if I will keep her. I would take the slow shove of a 416 over the sharp crack of a 25-06 any day.

Fit a better recoil pad. It is actually a pussy cat recoil wise.

That speed with the 100gn TTSX is what you can get out of the 257 Robert
The 25/06 is capable of SAFELY getting 3,400 with the same projectile for even better performance
My own 25 sighted 2 inches high at 100 is 8 inches low at 400

It would take awhile to figure out how many different bullet/powder combinations I have run through several different 25s. There are several partial boxes of 117gr and 120gr bullets collecting dust now. Out of 4, 25-06cal rifles, none of them preferred the heavier bullets. All of them liked 100gr or lighter though; down to 75gr. None of them liked the 60gr bullets either.
A Winchester that I sold my nephew, liked a hot 100gr load. All the others have given me better groups in that 3100-3200fps window. The only Savage 99 I still have in 250-3000, likes the same 100gr bullet at just over 2900fps. It really doesn't like the heavies.

I found a Ruger No 1 in 25-06 in a local pawn shop and decided to take a chance. I don't know anything about them and I'm hoping some of you will. It seems to be shot very little and doesn't show much wear for the age.
1) Is there anything I need to look for in the action / special care instructions?
2) What is this thing worth?
3) Any gotchas with zeroing/ shooting / hunting with one?
Any information or load data on the 25-06 would be helpful as well. I have never shot (or seen) one before today.

I should know better to reply when doing something else. It should of been 3300 fps and while I could of gotten more out of it I found that with the powders that I had on hand that 3300 was the sweet spot with less than a 1/2 moa groups at 250 yard targets.

In my book that is where I like it.

Upper right was the best group that I day, 6 shot groups with Weatereby Vanguard 25-06 and 2-3 minutes between shots 250 yards off of bench

I have learned to go shooting first thing in the mornings 6am-9am before the breezes start to blow and I can keep the sun at my back.

I have also learned to shoot a shot and then wait a couple of minutes to let the barrel cool slightly. In that time I'll shoot one of my pistols or another rifle.

I do have to admit that those three groups were some of the best that I have ever shot with that rifle. Now if I could just do that with my .340 Weatherby......
