Another Suppressor Thread

First, understand that 30 years of competitive baseball has trashed my right shoulder. It is arthritic to the point my orthopedist has told me I need a full replacement sooner rather than later, and there’s not much else to be done. So, while I was never bothered by recoil as a younger man, it does bother me now. Also, many years of hunting and shooting as a young man without ear protection has done a number on my hearing, and I want to keep what little I have. So, I plan on having the barrel threaded and installing a suppressor with a brake. There are a few options for big bore calibers that will accommodate a .416.

I know many purists hate the look of a suppressor and I respect everyone’s point of view and opinions, but I have always been a function before form, substance before style, kind of guy. I’m not bothered by the look. I also find it somewhat confusing that hunters that insist that a 3-position safety and control feed action are absolute minimum requirements for dangerous game don’t give allowance for how much quicker and more accurately a hunter can administer follow up shots with a good suppressor/brake system. The .416 Taylor recoils about 10lbs less than the Rigby but is still around 50lbs of recoil. A good suppressor/brake system can reduce this by over 60%, resulting in a suppressed and braked .416 Taylor recoiling like a .308 Win. Also, much, much quieter than open muzzle.

I plan to take the barrel down from 23” to 21” and use a suppressor/brake around 8”, so 29” barrel length, but on a short action rifle, still just about 48” overall. That’s only an inch and half longer than my .300 Weatherby. Losing 2” of barrel saves about 6oz, so total weight gain with suppressor/brake is about 6oz. I think the tradeoff in greatly reduced recoil and report, as well as improved accuracy and quickness on follow ups, is worth the tradeoff in length and weight. At least for me.

OR, I could sell the .416 Taylor and buy a .416 Ruger Guide Gun with a 20” barrel which is already threaded. Doesn’t solve my scarce ammo situation, but really no worse than with the Taylor.
Will they really cut a 416 Taylor down to 308 recoil?!

Also, do they have to be closely matched to caliber--IOW can you take one off a 300 mag and screw it on to a 7mm mag with any efficiency?

The AB is a reflex only up to a 375 Cal. I have one on order.
The Hybrid 46 is a 45 cal can, I have one and use it on a hot loaded 45-70. I believe it will handle 416 Ruger pressures.
I also have a Hybrid 46 and I used it on my 416 Ruger last year while hunting giraffe and had no problems what so ever. I've also shot well over 100 rounds through it while developing loads for the 416 Ruger and my 375 Ruger. My 416 Ruger (Model 77) has the same ASR adaptor that my 375 Ruger (Savage) does so switching them back and forth takes less than a minute. This gun (375 Ruger) will accompany me on my upcoming 2026 lion hunt in the RSA, and yes the rifle will be wearing the suppressor for the hunt.

I use suppressors on several rifles for specific purposes. My DD M4 is my primary repel boarders home defense firearm and it is suppressed. I have another AR based 5.56 that is equipped with suppressor and thermal to deal with pigs in the pecans and armadillos in the shrubbery. I have a .22 with suppressor and use it with subsonics to cull the squirrel plague periodically. Finally, I have an R8 barrel in 6.5x55 suppressed as my "backyard" deer rifle.

I used one attached to a full length .300 Win Mag recently in Hungary and found it an abomination. This was spot and stalk hunting, and I felt like I was trying to stalk deer while carrying a surf rod.

I would never consider a suppressor on a dangerous game rifle. Open sight back up is important to me on such a rifle. Secondly, I want the full velocity capability of such a rifle, but I also do not want a single millimeter more in length than necessary to achieve that.

AS i'm in my 70's and like using my 416rigby i have sent it away to be shortened 2 inches and an over barrel mod fitted to protect my hearing and make it more pleasant to shoot

Any recommendations for "Best Buy"? Some of us are only becoming introduced to the practice, so maybe help us cut through the chase with no hard knocks....

Get multiple at a time. Caliber specific will give you the best sound reduction and recoil reduction. 22 cal suppressors with subsonic are the quietest. Don’t put your center fire can on rimfire because they are really dirty shooting. Having a can you can take apart and clean is nice but not as necessary on a centerfire.

Any supersonic ammo is going to be disappointingly loud if you are expecting movie quiet. I have been happy with my Silencerco 46m hybrid and it will literally work on anything I own with different attachments. I have silencer central cans and really like them too. I would read reviews and know that it’s a lot like shopping for tvs, unless you are comparing them side by side you will never notice the difference.
