Allure of the Ruger No1

Hickok45 did a video on the Ruger No 1 in 375 H&H. A fair amount of talking and a little shooting.
His target setup doesn't really suit the .375 all that well. I'd say it knocked him out of his big boy pants after a little bit too.

As to the allure, they used to come with really great wood. Now they are like most things chasing the holy bottom line.
They should build a great rifle with great wood and the three screw trigger and the legendary arms works safety and a decelerator pad. Ship them with Alaska arms QD rings too. For $2k or even $2500 that is not too much to ask. Add $200 for the previously chambered caliber of your choice +$300 for oddball stuff.

Thanks to the American ability to go into debt I just picked up a No.1 in 300 H&H.

So, just add another year before retardedment.....

@Forrest Halley, you should work for Ruger!
@Kevin Peacocke I wish I could put No. 1's together for a living. It would be nice to ensure that they are right coming from the factory. Big bores with sights aligned straight and regulated for the common loads instead of flip up sights and some random height front sight. I think a true custom shop could do a great job of this.
Sadly, I likely don't have the background to acquire this position. They'd likely not enjoy my telling them what could be done better.

Something is going on with this rifle! How long is the barrel and how does it shoot? I am not generally a fan of RSI, but this one is nice. It looks short for some reason.

Hahahaha it’s a standard No.1 with a 20 inch barrel. It looks so short because the action is quite short compared to a bolt action.
It shoots great, prefers the mid weight 7mm bullets and shoots Norma Oryx 156 gr factory ammunition under an inch. The only issue is that the barrel is quite thin and is surrounded by wood, as a result it heats up quite quickly and starts to string groups vertically. If you wait between shots it shoots very nicely!

The first two rounds are always together so for hunting I’ve never had a problem!

I don't know anything about the small #1's. I was unfortunately hooked in by the tropical models. The .375 heats up pretty decently and the .458 will burn you in 8 rounds. By then anything that hasn't been shot is either deaf or in the next county over. I'm not one to push my rifles on hot barrels.

Has anyone taken a lion with a Ruger No1? Looking for a photo for my Ruger No1 game collection. What about a croc picture? I see Ian Harford got a croc at Nduna Safaris in Mozambique with his 450/400.

I follow this thread with great interest. Just won an auction for a No.1 online. The rifle is in Germany and I can`t wait to get it to Sweden and lay my hands on it. Just hope that the police will do a fast job on my license and import application.
The rifle is a .300 win mag and looks to be in exellent condition.
I´ll keep looking at all the nice Pictures here while I wait (y)

I have a couple of rare versions of the model 1-S from lipskys or Hollowells, 250 additions never to be repeated...one is a ultra accurate one hole everytime shooter in 338 Win. the other a 1-S Fwt. with a slim 26 inch barrel 250 additions also, and it is in 250-3000 and shoots an inch or better, all 5 shot groups..My 7x57 is a mod. 77 RJ Renner special and its my go to rifle, iron sights, scope, stock is schnable in design and has side panals, its and awesome rifle..Ive always been a Mauser and mod. 70 fan, but Im liking these rugers better all the time, the best thing since sliced white bread...

Had Corlane sporting goods build me Ruger no.1 in 475 Turnbull with 26” bbl beautifully accurate rifle will be going to Africa in 2022 for eland. I’ve got a good handload with Barnes 400tsx and working on 500gr load so far 1875fps with woodleigh bullets.

6.5x55, 6.5x55, and 340 Weatherby. I did NOT chamber the 340 Weatherby which I find to be a very frustrating caliber for Africa. In a number 1, it provides horrific recoil while still being unusable for dangerous game, destroying meat on medium sized game, and just being generally dumb for anything other than Elk and Moose at distance.

If I had it my way, the gun would have been a 257 Weatherby.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
