This is another large caliber rifle that I have inherited. I don't want to sell it, I would like to find as much information about the gun as I can. The big bore guns have always fascinated me. Thanks in advance for any information you guys could give me.

I will add better pictures of the markings on the barrel when I get home. So far I believe it is built on an old Mauser action, but that's about it.

Neat gun for sure. Although I’ve seen quite a few Mauser guild guns, I’ve seen very few in 404 Jeffery. The octagonal to round barrel and full rib is very “German” while the ebony forehead tip is generally an English style. Is there a makers name engraved on the barrel rib? Cool gun that could use a little TLC.

It reminds of the rifles built for Ferraday and sons in Salesbury in the 1950’s and early 60’s

I'll take more and clearer pictures once I get home tonight. I can't remember whether there was a maker's name on it. I agree it defiantly needs to be cleaned and TLC.

It was made in Germany and later reproofed in England. It looks like a commercial Oberndorf action as well. More pics would be nice.
Thank you for the information. I don't get out of work till 10 pm EST so I won't be able to post more pictures until after 11 pm tonight but I'll be sure to take and add more pictures

I’ve no idea what you have here, but I do hope you’ll let us know as you get more information. And I hope you‘ll also have a functional rifle when it’s all said and done. It has obviously been used and after all that’s what it’s for, enjoy!

It would be nice to hunt with it looks like it has some history already.

Congratulations on becoming the owner of what seems to be a very nice old rifle , and in a great old classic caliber too . May you have many happy hunts with it !

Here are more pictures of the 404. I didn’t see any makers name but maybe some of the marks will mean something to one of you guys who know more about these guns than I do.

I would love to hear more about this. I often visited Feredays down in Manica Road, there was that massive double rifle prop hanging outside and old tattered trophy mounts in the display window. The two old owners were still serving and when you bought something it would be wrapped in brown paper and string, the latter pulled from a stainless steel ball dispenser. The feeling was so right.
sorry for the distraction, but I can imagine one of your beautiful rifles in the rack there.

Looks like a good honest .404j Mauser. I am sure that every nick & scratch has a story to tell. If it was mine I would clean it only. Then I would hunt with it like it was meant for, up close and personal. It sure as hell was not meant to be a safe queen.

I personally don’t have any use for any gun that can’t be taken out and hunted with. The only thing I might consider replacing is the recoil pad as it has a chunk missing from the bottom of it

I do not see the recoil pad in any of the pictures, but if it was mine (which it is not) I would leave it like it is, even that missing chunk might hold a story. Please do not take this wrong because I love the rifle. Putting a new pad on it is "like pouring perfume on a pig".

Merry Christmas, Lon

This is what’s left of the recoil pad

Very true, I wish I knew more of the history of the gun. I shared a picture of the recoil pad. Do you think it was original to the gun?

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
