5.7x28 anyone use one?

Good afternoon gentleman does anyone have any experience with 5.7x28 ? My 22 magnum is getting warn out and I’m considering a dark mountain arms stowaway to replace it for use around the slaughter house. Wondering if anyone had any experience with the caliber they’d be willing to share.

I have shot the FN Five-seveN , recoil is soft, compared to a 9mm, but gun is uncomfortable for me as I have small hands.

Only shot at a paper target, so not much more I can say about it.

Ammo is expensive.

I had a chance to shoot the FN P90 quite a bit when they were first released… lots of fun, and for a very specific and very small mission set, very practical… but overall I’m not a fan of it ballistically for what it was originally designed to do…

That said… as a .22 mag replacement it probably has quite a bit of merit…

I’d guess it would be more expensive to feed… and the 5.7x28 blows the doors off the 22 mag ballistically… but in a slaughter operation a little more ballistics certainly isn’t going to hurt anything…

I have a PS90 ... tons of fun and an ultimate space gun if you like them. Good luck trying to reload from what I hear (I haven't attempted myself even though I have the components). There's a couple options in handgun form, and at one point in time there was a AR57 upper that was useable. I really just got the PS90 because it was an ultimate space gun and I like such things.

My brother has a Five seveN that he likes. He claims it is very accurate out past 100 yards. It is not small.

Ammo expense isn’t such an issue because you’re generally only using a few a day. A little more authority isn’t a bad thing either that’s why we first switched to a magnum.

Had a PS90 for a few years. Fun gun, but if you plan to reload for it get something else.

Have a FN 5.7x28 pistol I like it alot. Its a great gun that I carry dayly on my trap line. Great for coyotes , fox and a occasional bobcat. Minimal damage using Hornady 40 gr. V-Max's

No problem reloading just make sure you don't tumble the brass, it has a lacquer coating that is needed for proper functioning in semi-auto guns. I deprime then just wash in very hot tap water with Dawn dish soap rinse good with hot water, then let them dry on a towel. Using a small fan, moving them occasionally let them dry for atlest 24 hours.

I have a bunch of rounds down range with 5.7X28.
With a P90
A Ruger 57 pistol and a Ruger 57 LC carbine.
Also a 57 Center AR15 16” upper and a 57 Center SBR

An observation shooting 3/8 mild steel plate.
At 15 yards
A 9mm 115 grain fmj puts a bit of a divot in the plate.
The 5.7X28 40 grain fmj and blue tipped do nothing to the plate.
A 36 grain brass penetrator round does nothing to the plate.

I have not shot varmints with it.

I do reload for it. Definitely not a progressive press loading. Gotta take your time.
So… watch for sales and buy the ammo cheap.

Probably would be a decent round for varmints.

How would you say a 5.7 compares to a 30 carbine? M1 was an ideal rig around the slaughterhouse but unfortunately there on Trudeau/carneys ban list so I lost mine overboard fishing one trip.

I live on Lk.St. Clair and fish on the Canadian side of the lake. Alway snag on the bottom fishing it must be all those guns lost overboard there !

For two legged varmits.
The 30 carbine is a much better option. Nearly twice the eagerly on target, pokes bigger holes.
The biggest advantage to the 5.7X28 is magazine capacity.
Second is the handgun option.
Third is recoil, non existent in a long gun.
The 5.7 being a PDW round that is in my opinion a good round for keeping you out of trouble, or allowing you to get to help or help to get to you.
Gives you a high capacity weapon in a small package.

4 legged varmints, I think the nod would goto the 5.7, with in reasonable ranges.

Although this thread has got thinking about a 5.7 build for prairie dogs.
Might be a 8 pound rifle medium contour barrel, 1-12 twist, maybe 1-14.

During Covid I got a call from a buddy. One of his friends wanted a ar-15 in 223 to start his grandson.there wasn’t one for sale and there was no ammo.
He did find a 5.7 ar of some type. And bought it because they had 3 boxes of some tipped ammo for 170$ a box.
They called me to see if I knew anything about it and would it work on deer/hogs.
Told him with out seeing the ammo I had no idea. But that I would not hunt with a 5.7 it was on par with a 22 hornet or there about.

And was made to use ap ammo to poke holes in vest.
And I looked at getting a handgun to carry in it.
But there was no way o was giving up my 44 or 45 to carry it.

Shooting a cow in the head with a fmj should not be a problem.

My dad worked for mr Chester at frosty morning a old kill and butcher place in town in the early 60s they used 22 lr and 32 rimfire
One bull did not take kindly to being shot. And got out in town . Dad had his 30-30 in the truck. Got it put down.
After that mr Chester went and bought 2 94 for the plant.

What are the ballistics from say, a 22" bl. for the 5.7x28? A CZ Hornet M527 will make 3,340fps with a 40gr. HP for gophers using R-P brass, pistol primers and 14.4gr. LG. Lee crimp die is necessary for sub 1/2" accuracy at 109 yards(our range). The Ruger M7722 will also handle these loads, as-will a T.C. Contender & Ruger #3 or #1 in Hornet.

I'm not a fan of the 5.7 or the 22 mag from handgun length barrels. Will they do the job if shot placement is precise on a hog? Yes, but rifle length barrels are still preferred.

As others have posted, reloading the 5.7 can be a chore, but in my experience no more or less than the Hornet or 17 Rem. Special techniques are required for each, as well as powders, etc.

A good bolt or single shot rifle vs a pistol would get the nod. Perhaps a T/C Contender carbine? Reloading might be a learning experience, but not any challenge a man of your intellect couldn't overcome. Patience is a virtue with this and similar rounds.

I’ve shot a lot of coyotes with my P90 and jack rabbits with my Ruger 5.7. We shot the coyotes out of a helicopter and the P90 is a handy little gun in a small bird and doesn’t dangerously throw brass skyward. The little stowaway is a cool little gun and would probably serve you well for intended purpose.
Watch places like PSA and they regularly have ammo for 19.99/50. I order 500 or 1k every time they do.

For those that may not be aware of the Stowaway (I wasn't).

And remember, the OP is asking about for use around the slaughter house; not for hunting or self defense. And, since the OP resides in Canada, I'm assuming that handguns are not on the menu of choices.

Thats a cool looking rifle. But honestly id get a cz457 $120 ish you can get new barrels and easy to swap.
