458 Lott ate my QD Warne rings

Pic of a talley that actually ripped the steel, taken a screen shot from another website so I hope it is ok to post. And further up the thread it was commented how the alaskan arms rings failed with the Lott.

The talley pic shows wear into the lug, then the ring failed badly.

@C.W. Richter any other suggestions on what high quality rings to use? View attachment 371503

Something is not right there. The recoil should bear against the recoil shoulder not on the clamp. If a Talley properly mounted, were to fail, this is not where it would happen.

In fact, I just came back in from shooting my Lott w a ghost ring and pulled the scope out to double check the mount. No way that clamp should bear on anything in the direction of recoil.

Richard Near alphamount. Superb craftsmanship, not ideal for the cz but a similar set up would be good for the hard kickers with the three ring set up.

@WAB I just Google talley ring failure 458 Lott and that thread came up. Posted on a different site by a guy that loves the 458 Winchester I think

This is a pic of the front base and bottom of ring on my Lott. This mount has seen hundreds of rounds. As you can see, there is no way for recoil force to bear on anything other than the recoil shoulder of the ring and base. The clamp has no recoil shoulder in contact with it.

Isn't it the recoil lug on the ring that is cracking out?

You will also see that it would be difficult to differentiate this ring/base from new items.

Does that ring sit inside the milled portion of the base? Looks like a great set up !

Yes that’s the Talley QD system. You can see why the pic you posted makes no sense. There is nothing under recoil up against the clamp.

Sorry, I didn’t mean for that to sound like that, I should have said that I can’t make sense of the pic based on the Design of the Talley’s I have installed.

Not from what I can see. It is actually the clamp that is breaking away. Also, if you look, the clamp appears to be milked to where it is only half the width of the ring. This is not a characteristic of any Talley ring I own. This failure requires a transverse load or a longitudinal load on the clamp. This is simply not possible with the Talley’s I have.

the farther above the bore and the heavier the scope, the greater the force exerted on the mounts...it's like adding adverse leverage. it's not an issue until you have a 100 ft/lbs+ recoiling gun. mentioned above, but why i don't use $1K guns for DG. They need help. Too many variables to accurately diagnose on-line. Did the scope mounts fail shooting it on your shoulder (as it was designed?) The integral bases seem to be the basis of the issue, to me. I bet if you reached out to CZ they might have a story or two to relate...do they make a steel (Warne) picatinny rail for that style CZ? Wit it you could do the 3 ring mount (another v. shown above) using std. weaver-style steel Warne.

IMHO if someone needs a lead slead to dial in a gun, they have selected too much gun. Nothing makes me laugh more than the annual crop of widgets that appear for sale in the "industry" part of this great tradition. That said, i'm busy wrapping up a new product whereby the hunter affixes his Lead SledTM to the PH's sticks...it's good for the local economies, as there will be new job openings for Sticks-bearers.

@WAB in the talley pic you can see the exact same wear as my warne ring on the recoil lug. On the talleys the recoil lug is on the edge of the ring, warne is in the middle.the recoil lug drops down below the dovetail part of the ring

I use one for sight in purposes and I suspect I shoot a 40 as well as you do. I certainly own several that I fire a good bit. I even use my lead sled for things like a .275. The accuracy of the load and scope settings are important to me. I get assurance out of no induced variables, and a rifle that shoots exactly where it is supposed to when afield. But I guess you are just a real man.

A steel pic rail would only make the problem worse. More weight, more height being clamped the same way.

@Wyatt Smith the second recoil lug integrated into the front ring would help a lot. I will look into that. I may even fabricate something to add onto the existing rings to do the same thing.

@C.W. Richter I am happy you don't use $1000 guns for your hunting. The CZ I am using in this thread coat 2.3x that. There is a 404 Jeffery in a CZ 550 here that is priced at $8500 dollars, would it be more to your liking?

Good grief

I had trouble with my 500 A-Square bending my Warne rings. It is built on a BRNO 602. I had a buddy attach a steel picatinny rail and I now use TPS steel rings. No problem now but I had to add a cheek piece to the stock to be able to cheek the rifle correctly to see through the scope

The scope weighs 21.5 oz that I was using , going to weigh some of my lighter ones . My Schmidt weighs 25 . I will try a lighter one if I can find a spare set of one inch rings that I know I have somewhere. . Found them! Think they may be old Leupold rings for the CZ 550 .

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
