Welllllllll, I did something that I swore I would ever do again, which was to buy a rifle before checking for brass availability.

Bought a 404 Jeffery because I just don't own enough .4+ rifles, to find that my brass options seems to be to buy some Norma from a place in the UK if I can get them to ship it to the US, perhaps neck up 375 RUM, buy hornady ammo to get the brass or to buy Bertram.

Not really a Bertram fam, but if you are interested there seems to be some at https://deserttechmunitions.com/bertram-404-jeffery/?searchid=1697&search_query=404+jeffery for those who are interested. It is the new Bertram US dealer.

Far from cheap, but separates the men from the boys.

Public service announcement I suppose. I am getting on wait list for Norma everywhere. Fortunately, there was some available with the rifle.

The newer Bertram brass I have shot in 450 3-1/4” & 404 Jeffery has all been excellent. I prefer it to Hornady (pretty much the other option). Desert Tech is easy to deal with too.

I think your cheapest/easiest option is to buy Hornady ammo, pound out the bullets, throw away the powder, and go from there. It will at least give you primed brass. Their bonded bullets are okay I guess. Surprisingly I do see some of their Interlock ammo for sale. Those would be good for wasting at the range or plains game. Look for lighter copper bullets from Cutting Edge or Hammer. I'm not convinced 400 gr is necessary for dangerous game if using modern bullet metallurgy.

I had issues with RWS brass. Too short and inconsistent rim thickness. Avoid that junk!

Hornady brass has worked well for me.

While I was shopping for things for the new rifle, I found that Warne is having a 20% off sale on everything on their website

Buy Hornady ammo, shoot it and have some fun, then you have once fired brass. Bertram brass is iffy depending on the caliber. Had 2 case head separations with Bertram 404 brass on 3rd firing.....no good, and it isn't the rifles chamber.....I made the guys at Griffin Howe measure it twice.

Norma would be great but I think all the American market is getting are the scraps after Ruag fills all the other orders from around the world.

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
