375 Ruger to 375 H&H

Just learning my way around gun smithing and conversions. Getting harder to find rifles to help with my afflickson - I'm a lefty. So, here it is: could a Ruger 77 in 375 Ruger be reamed or otherwise converted to H&H without rebarreling?

No, because the 375 Ruger is a “fatter” cartridge than the H&H and headspaces on the shoulder instead of the belt like the H&H. That means the casing diameter is larger on the Ruger at the point immediately in front of where the H&H belt would end so there’s no metal left to ream.

hi, thx in advance for any info.
i have owned the .375 H7H mag., love this caliber since 1980s and fired .375 ruger mag. seemed adequate.
like to know from reloader , shooter and overall perspective of owner. what is your view? i was shooting 250 grain bullet and drop at 400 yards / i believe acceptable, like 24" / 2'... i can convert to metric or portably decimal if imperial is not how you measure.
reason; like to have another elk / N A buffalo / hope Africa safari rifle in my hands this year.

I’m clueless on rechambering a 375 ruger , maybe someone else will weigh in on if a
416 ruger or 404 Jeffery is possible, imo there more versatile on the medium to heavy side ( and I have a 375R and wish I had a 416 )

Those would require installing a new barrel instead of a simple chamber reaming job.

You would have to rebarrel! Then work the action for a longer length round. Not worth the effort. Juts sell the ruger and buy a 375 H&H and move on.

375 H&H and 416 Rigby can be built on standard length Mauser actions. Perhaps standard length Ruger actions are shorter than standard length Mauser?

I might be wrong but what is wrong with the 375 Ruger? It performs as well or better than the 375HH even with a shorter bbl. The only downside is limited factory ammo choices. But, reloading is cheaper than modifying the rifle. If you do not want to reload, then send some brass to one of the custom reloading companies for a few boxes of custom ammo. Or if your heart is simply set on a 375HH, just buy another rifle. With the 375 Ruger, you get a shorter, lighter, handier rifle that performs the same as the 375HH in every way. My only negative is my experience with Rugers is that they lack the precision straight from the factory to shoot as well as some other rifles. Good enough but not great. I like great. Handloading can sometimes get you to great.

Simple answer NO.
Chamber dimension is all wrong so even if you ran a H&H reamer into it the chamber would still be to big
In top of that the Ruger is a standard long action where as the H&H requirements are a magnum length.
There's nought wrong with the 375 Ruger .
For a left hand 375 H&H look for a zastava or interarms in left hand.

As a fellow lefty shooter you have my sympathy. When I started to take hunting seriously if was VERY hard to fine quality LH rifles only Savage and a few Remington 700s were available - and I am not a fan of either.

I now have LH rifles in 98 Mauser (Granite Mountain), Win Model 70, Mathieu, and Ruger M77 Mrk II. A lot more shoices now, but I think the M70 Classic is the finest generally available (second hand market) available and the factory M77 Mrk II is a good choice as well.

You can have the barrel bored out to a .416 Ruger if you find someone will to do that.

I would call JES rebore in Oregon and see what he can do-
