375 H&H loads

Brickman,

I thought you might find this to be of interest. I have a reprint copy of the Kynoch / ICI catalog of 1936. The Kynoch catalog lists 285 gr ammo for the 9.3x62 at 2250 fps. I bet that old Kynoch load took a lot of game in Africa back in the day. So, I'd say your .375 H&H load with a 300 gr Hornady RN at 2200 - 2300 fps is in pretty good company.

Just my ramblings... Cheers! Bob F. :)

Thanks for sharing that neat piece of history !
I’ve been very pleased with the results in accuracy and performance on game. Pretty mild in the recoil department too.

According to John Taylor, the early ammo for the 9.3x62 was 285/6 gr. soft or solids at 2,175fps. In 1923, the ballistics were increased to 2,340fps. I see today's Hornady ammo runs 2,360fps. Today's Norma, 2,362fps.

375 H&H, 270 TSX, federal 215 primer and 80 grains of CFE223 equal 2806 fish in my rifle

IMO, fire walling any cartridge is foolish. Sooner or later that practice comes back to bite in butt. For hunting ammo development use published data, load conservatively and use a chronograph. The chronograph is maybe the best piece of “reloading” equipment you will ever invest in.

I see no reason to not use extreme type, temperature insensitive powders. Examples commonly discussed here are IMR 4350 vs H 4350. Temperature sensitive powders show both velocity and pressure increases as temps increase. IMR 4350 is a temperature sensitive powder. Also just because the ambient temp may be 90F doesn’t mean the ammo/rifle sitting in sun won’t be significantly hotter that 90F. It’s generally accepted that for every degree F of temperature increase, loads with powders like IMR 4350, will show velocity increases of 1.5 to 2.0 fps along with commensurate increases in pressure. If that load was fire walled at 60 F then sits in sun to exceeding 150 F, don’t be surprised at sticky bolt lift (or worse) right when you need to cycle the bolt during a hunt. ;)

Anyone have data or a good starting point for H4350 and Barnes 300gr TSX? None of my manuals list that combo?

As an FYI, Kevin Robertson asserts that 2400 fps is about the perfect speed for both 375 H&H and 9.3x62.

Lotsa guys are fans of more speed, but in all honesty, 2550 doesn't get you a whole lot more than 2400 gets you. If you get an accurate load in the 2400s, I'd stick with that.
He also would prefer you shoot a 350gr bullet out of said .375.

I had one of the new model 70s and I can promise you it sucked!!
It wouldn’t shoot them under an inch and a half
That is disappointing. We have a bunch of us that bought new Model 70's and they shoot lights out. The complaints have been bottom metal fit and finish to the latch and the safety being very rough in the beginning. But they shot 1 moa or better.

Possibly to slow burning? ‍♂️
Of the slower powders listed for a couple other cartridges I reload - 6.5x55 and 280 AI, it gives me the best velocity out of 22" barrels, certainly better than IMR 4831.

That’s what I was hoping for, ended up buying a Parkwest D76 brushveld,
That rifle is crazy good! But it’s what you would expect for spending that type of money

Good morning,
Did you hunt w Leeuwkop at their ranch or in Zimbabwe? The ranch looks awesome, but I'll be in Zimbabwe for buffalo and whatever else we dig up.
What did you hunt for?
Vaccines?
What rifle did you use?
I feel like I need a good cotton safari shirt and an ammo belt to make the hunt feel right!
How often did you shoot prior to going?
Did you use sticks for shooting practice?
