I was given a handful of cast lead bullets in .375, and I would like to try and find a load for my .375 H&H that would duplicate (or surpass) .38-55 ballistics for hunting deer/hog. I have a lot of data using pistol powders (most of it obsolete), and if possible, would like to load it with rifle powders (I have a big supply of IMR4064 and IMR4320). I also have H4895, IMR4350, H414, and a little Reloader 19.
Anyone have any good loads they would like to share? I don't plan on buying a mold until I find a good load......tried to find a good load for my .338 Win. mag w/o success, so hopefully this rifle will shoot them (cast bullets) better..............

What weight are the bullets?

Sorry....meant to post that info; two different bullets: one is a gas check that weighs in at 285; the other is a flat base that weighs in about 253 grains.

249.0gr. flat base:

AA 5744 - 25.5grs. 1454fps / 35.8grs. 1910fps

264.0gr. w/gas check:

AA 5744 - 27.0grs. 1461fps. / 34.0grs. 1736fps

These loads are taken directly from the Lyman Cast Bullet manual.

None of the powders you have on hand are listed in their data. And while the bullet weights aren't quite exactly what you have it shouldn't be too hard to adapt their data to yours.

Try AA 5744. It's not position sensitive and no filler(s) is needed. In fact AA says NOT to use a filler. I use it in my 450/400 Ruger No.1 and it keeps me shooting cheaply year 'round from range work to effective field use, elk included.

The powders you listed are too slow for pushing a 249gr cast at 38-55 velocity.

I would use the H4895, you can find jacketed load data for those bullet weights, and reduce the load to 60% of what is published. I use IMR4198 in my cast bullet loads for the 375 Ruger, and have had very good success with my 350gr cast, and a new bullet I am casting which drops a 271gr hollowpoint. I see that 35 grains of IMR 4198 gives 1800 fps with a 264gr cast bullet in the H&H.

Thank you HDH.....the info is much appreciated.(y)

Bumping an old thread.

I have a nice 2350 fps / 275 grain practise load for 375 H&H. I use Vihtavuori N140 minimum jacketed starting load for now.

I just got a mold from MP-molds and it's working great. 75 m accuracy is approaching 30 mm with unsorted bullets straight from the mold. No leading even without gas check because I coat my bullets with both PC and Hi Tek.

And my scope is no group shooting scope, it's a B.Nickel 1-4 with a heavy german reticle for close range.

Good for breaking claybirds @ 75, I will sort bullets better and probably come up with a 200 m load for a 10" gong.

An 80's Sako Deluxe with some pitting, still no leading after 80 cast rounds. That actually surprised me quite a bit.

I like to practise "an imaginary buffalo charge" at claybirds on berm 10-20 meters with a timer, 1+4 rounds. This can eat lots of ammo when done often.

Typical 75 m grouping, both with GC and without:

You can find more info at Cast Boolits, I've been there since '05 or so.

What diameter cast lead bullets should be used in a 375 H&H? Will .377 work?
That would be a good place to start. Each rifle will tend to be a bit of a law until itself, depending on configuration of the throat/leade, the condition of the rifling, etc..

There are a lot of variables!

Thank you, tarbe! I may give them a try.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
