....so I am planning on building a 35 W on a FN large ring Mauser action that is currently an 8x57 Mauser. Am I limiting my future reloading by using a shorter action/mag box than a "true long action" such as a donor 3006/270 Remington or Winchester ? The commercially available BARNES 200 gr TTSXBT measures an OAL of 3.340 and the 8x57 bolt nor magazine has any difficulty with loading and stacking rounds in the mag.....so if I handload with some 225 gr or 250 gr bullets will I exceeded the box mag length ? what say you ? What are your experiences with the 35W on a large ring Mauser ? Thanks in advance.

As long as you load to mag length you will have no issues.
The coal for the Whelen is 3.34".
My Savage action is a freak as I von load to almost 3.6" for the mag length.

Get yourself a 1:12 twist barrel and an 8# tub of cfe223 and a box of 250gn hot cores. Stoke it up to 2,700fps and go have fun

If 3.340” COAL fits you should be fine. I load all my 225’s and 250’s to that length
@45-70guy
For some strange reason my Stevens 200 aka Savage 110 came with a mag length of 3 6". Some of my loads run 3.4" which is handy.

That’s odd, but also cool because you can do even more tweaking and testing on seating further out and more case capacity.
I’ll have to look in my notes when I get the house back on the foundation but I remember when I did castings of my chambers I could go 3.400” and littler further but i used 3.4” as the standard, many of my loads i actually run right at 3.340”.
