.35 Whelen Project Part II

Hello all!

Since my other project has been giving me fits, I thought I would put that one on hold, and do another .35 Whelen project.
This time, I know it’s something I can definitely finish on my own, and make it look like halfway decent!
I ordered a Mauser 98 banner action complete rifle set up that just needs minor finishes.
It has a Green Mountain, 4140 molybdenum, in the white, 1 in 14 inch twist barrel. The walnut stock is already beautiful, but when it gets the finish done, should be a knock out!
She has a double set trigger system, old school, which I absolutely love!
Her steel furniture is still in the white, but should be a decent finish job to do.
Well, enough with the explanation!
Time to put some pics up of her!

I would appreciate some suggestions on stock finishing, especially if there are any out there that can be beautiful and hopefully water resistant or water proof, plus whatever tips anyone else might have on it.

For a good finish that is easy to do and one I have used quite a bit is 1 part vegetable turps, 2 parts tung oil and 1 part satin spar varnish. Like most penetrating finishes the porousity of the walnut will dictate the number of coats to completly seal the wood so once your stock is finish sanded and filled simply brush on liberally and wait for 20 to 30 minutes and wipe off. Stand for a few hrs and repeat. do so again twice daily over 3 days and you are done. The veg turps thins and draws the oil/varnish into the wood to set and seal with the surface giving a traditional oil finish look. Can be repaired the same way as any traditional oil finish

I've been using Linspeed (yes correct spelling google it) for around 10 years. Easy to use and gives a beautiful finish that is easily repaired if needed.
I also use Gilleys gun wax on all my metal and timber for even more protection.

Linspeed is good, Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil is similar. I also like Tung oil, dries pretty fast and last well.
Lot of service rifle guys swear by boiled Linseed Oil but it takes eons to really dry and is just too labor intensive, I gave up on it years ago.
Did your receiver come with that hideous side mount?
