338 Ultra Mag and 185gr TTSX

I can't see any useful reason to go that light with a 338 RUM. A 338 Federal, sure.

But a 225 gr or heavier will have higher BC and MUCH higher momentum than a 30 cal class bullet, and can take advantage of the terrific case capacity of 338 RUM

Inside 300 yards, pretty much all modern cartridges are flat-shooting. Past 300 yards, heavier 338 RUM will give much better terminal performance than a 185 because a 185 is going to give up velocity in a hurry relative to 225 or 250. Barnes TTSX 250 has a BC of over .60. Guarantee you it's faster at 300+ than a 185.

Yikes!
The 185 TTSX at a mere 2,900 fps in a sub 9 Lb 338 WM (sands brake) is all the recoil I want to put up with.

I hope you find the load that works for you - and report back.

I concur with sgt-zim, I don’t see a need to go that light. A 225 gr Barnes TTSX has a b.c. of .514 and can be started out north of 3000 fps and a 250 gr Barnes LRX has a b.c. of .602 and can start out at 2900+ fps.
I’ve settled on those two bullets and the 225 gr Swift in my .338 RUM. The Swift worked great in Namibia last year.

Thanks for all the replies. I have decided to go with the 225gr Swift A Frame and Reloader 22 in my 338 Rum.

Reloader 25 gives me the best accuracy with that bullet.

While it isn't a RUM my. 340 Weatherby loves the 225 TTSX Barnes bullet over 88 grains of RL 22.

Hi Lance, Hope you well. I collect Mauser rifles and they are very much part of my cultural history in Africa. Would you consider selling the rifle now a year on ? I'd like to place it in my collection of Mauser rifles. Many thx

I saw where you hunted elephant with backcountry safaris in Zimbabwe.
Was looking to book an elephant hunt and wanted to know how your hunt went
and if you would recommend them.

Thanks
Mike
hi, do you know about lions hunters, leopard hunters, and crocodiles hunters of years 1930s-1950s
I'm new to Africa Hunting. I would like to purchase a Heym 450-400 double rifle. I'm left-handed but would prefer a non-canted gun. Is anyone in the community considering parting with theirs?
