338/06 or 25/06?

Oh OK i didn't know if it was a hot load or no. I know there used to be several "Ruger only" loads out there specifically for the No1. There's also Ruger only loads for the Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk revolvers. I'm not a fan of short barrels so 24-26 inches is about all i look for. I will admit though, that 28 incher on the Mark V's is AWFULLY long in a blind or stand.

"I know there used to be several "Ruger only" loads out there specifically for the No1."

I believe that was specifically for the .45-70 cartridge only. It doesn't apply to ALL cartridges. Three pressure levels for the .45-70: 1) Trapdoor Springfield, 2) Marlin model 1895, 3) Ruger No. 1

"There's also Ruger only loads for the Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk revolvers."

That's for the .45 Colt cartridge in the Blackhawk. The Blackhawk can take higher pressure loads than the Colt SAA revolver. It doesn't apply to all cartridges in the Blackhawk. (Also, IIRC, the Super Blackhawk was/is chambered only for the .44 Mag cartridge. No special "Ruger only" loads.)

@Axle2010
My money is still on a SAVAGE 110 or if you can pick up a cheap Stevens 200 ( just a Savage 110 by another name but a lot cheaper) you can get them in 25-06 for around $350aud.
Then get a Shaw or Douglas prefit barrel in 35 Whelen and you two rifles for less than $800 witch is good value in my book being a tight wad

@Rick HOlbert
The shame of it.
A 35 guy recommending a 338.
That is a horrible thing to tell someone.
Your little 358 performance is better than the 338 and game doesn't go as far after being shot
I will have to have a serious talk with you when I see you.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

What can I say Bob? I just like medium bore rifles and the 338-06 is a good round.

Yes sir I am a big Elmer Keith fan! I'm starting to think Mr Bob Nelson might be on to something and get a barrel in each caliber maybe one in 375 Whelen or 280AI too. There's just too many cool cartridges out there for an old broke redneck to have one of each. And for some reason I love the sound of that 358 Norma mag but can see no viable reason to get one. But it's fun to get in here and read you gents and your experiences with them. If not for yall I would never have gone beyond the 300 WinMag.
That's the joy of shooting and experiencing different calibers. "Ol Bob is correct in his advocating the 35 Whelen. 350 Rigby performance in a modern case. I can recommend the 375 Whelen also. Close friend African hunting companion and custom rifle smith Pete Underwood, built himself a 375 Whelen on a 03 Springfield action and with 300grn A-Frames has proven a real killer on Alaskan grizzlies and African game. Seems he's started a resurgence in interest in that cartridge locally as he has built 7 rifles now for his customers that have seen first hand how it preforms in the field. As for the 358 Norma? Neck the 338 Win Mag up to 35 caliber and the performance is very close to the 358 Norma. Brass is much easier to obtain. Then again Bob Nelson will agree, the 35 Whelen with handholds is right there also. LOL, this is a affliction that I hope a cure is never found!!

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
