.280 Remington

Headed on my first plains game hunt in May. Looking to bring my .280 Remington. Im using 154 Grain Hornady GMX bullet. Looking for any input from the seasoned veterans if this is enough gun for like a Kudu,Gemsbok, Waterbuck.
I may bring two rifles, the other rifle is a .300WSM

As long as you put the bullet where it belongs you will be fine. Many of my African animals including Kudu and Gemsbuck have been taken with a 7mm and 160 gr AB's. You .280 is roughly comparable. Shoot it a lot especially off of shooting sticks and you should be fine. Bruce

In the 300 try 165gr Swift A-Frames.

The 280 Remington...a sleeper cartridge that doesn't get the looks it often deserves. It should work very well for your hunt. A fine choice.

My wife has used her 280 in SA. the Artic, Texas, Wyoming, Scotland, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Shot everything from Antelope, Elk, Moose, Bear, Caribou, Red Stag, Impala, Bush Buck, Gemsbok, Black wildebeest, Whitetail and Mule Deer. Never had a problem. 150 gr. Nosler Partition is bullet of choice.

Seen a .280 wreak absolute havoc on whitetail deer. Should be a fine choice with a well-made bullet.

Whatever it's worth I saw a recovered GMX from an elk. The petals sheared off after expanding and were recovered in the meat. Yes the bullet worked it was out of a 280 Ackley don't remember the distance or bullet placement. But the user preferred partitions and felt the gmx guilding metal was to brittle compared to Barnes softer copper. I have no experience myself, just passing info along.

what he said for pg hunt, your ph will tell you to bring your deer rifle that you shoot well [the last part emphasized].

280 is just fine for your PG hunt, I would take just one rifle if just hunting PG.

Guster , That 280 will do the job. With mine I've taken elk, mule deer, Dall sheep and antelope. While in Africa I used a rented rifle from my PH a 270. Took kudu gemsbuck bushbuck wildebeest and Impala with it. I would have been more comfortable with my 280 and the 160 grain bullets.

An absolute excellent choice.....I have been hunting with the .280 for well over 20 years....Killed Coos Deer in Arizona to 400# Black Bears here at home and many Mule Deer out at long range, and up close, all DRT with correct shot placement.

Bullet's of Choice 140 grain Nosler Accubond and Barnes 145 grain LRX.

I have no Africa experience to share, but I have used a 280ai on elk and mule deer for several years now. 160 grain Accubond over healthy dose of H4831sc does everything I need.

Read up on the 7x64 Brenneke. It is very well regarded as plains game round. Your .280 is an almost identical American version of the older, more worldly, and better established German cartridge. You will have no problems if you do your part. Good luck, Waidmannsheil, and happy hunting.

My son and I took our first trip to South Africa this past June. He took his 7 Rem Mag and Federal ammo loaded with 160 gr Triple Shocks. He took an Impala, Zebra, Gemsbok, Waterbuck, Kudu and Eland. No issues at all. You're 280 will be fine.

Arranged for my nephew to get Kimber Hunter in 280AI for deer/Sambar in Southern Australia. First day in camp, a very nice meat doe after half an hour's walk. Nosler Accubond 140s go well under MOA. His latest load with 160s is just as accurate.
Any decent bullet in the right place will suffice.

.280 or 7x64 are two of my favorite rounds. I have no experience with the GMX but think I would use a Triple Shock instead, a tougher bullet and usually not hard to find a load for. My boy used his .284 Win on two trips and done well with it. His load is a 140gr Triple Shock at just over 3000 fps and hammers hard when properly placed. .284 is really no different than the .280 in power level.
