.270 Winchester for plains game

The chart above assumes a wimpy velocity for the .270 and an average velocity for the .06 which is not fair to compare. THe .270 can easily get to 2856 fps just like the '06. Compare the two rounds at the same speed and look at the downrange figures. The .270 will arrive with more energy. Not saying its better, but the comparisons must be fair.

By the way, just because a 14 year-old doesn't shoot your caliber of choice, he's 'necked down'? Okay, I'm 'necked down' then too, because I shoot a .308 Win., right?

Your right as Rain, I was going by the min. loading chart. Everyone needs to work up a load that will shoot in thier rifle the best. which means lots of fun at the range.

Absolutely!! BTW, I dont even own a .270. Have owned a couple over the years, but never hang onto them. My favorite "lesser" caliber right now is the old 7x64 (metric .280 Rem) of which I have 3 at the moment. The best shooting one is a STEYR Professional Model M recently acquired. Shoots like a house afire.

AlSpeath, your views of the .270 are clearly diluted by your apparent infatuation with the .30-06 and 7X57 Mauser. The funny thing is, The 7X57 and the .270 are identical in killing power under 250 yards, out past which the .270 surpasses it, yet to use the .270 is an obamination worthy of eternal punishment. The .270 with a 160 gn partition will do every bit as well as the 7x57 with a 175 partition.

I also do not appreciate being called a necked down hunter and I wish that you would continue to discuss this in a mature manner.

Some good advice has been given and the only thing I can think of to add is use enough scope. I used a 1.8 - 5.5 power and found that it is simply not enough magnification for the smaller game (say Impala size) when much over 100 yards. Next time I will definitely use at least 3 - 9 power scope.

I would use at least a 2-7 X scope. I would most likely use a 3-9 X though.

I agree with most everything that has been said, but I would like to point out three things.

First, you didn't say where you were going to be hunting and whether or not DG might be present. If there is no DG in the area, your .270 with well constructed bullets in the 140-150 grain class will do you fine, providing you shoot it well. However, if DG will be present in your hunting area, carry a .375 as a a minimum with a soft up and solids down in case you become involved in a "situation" with a buff, lion or elephant.

Second, one big advantage of a .30/06 is that you can shoot 180, 200 or 220 grain loads in it. Heavy for caliber bullets are do well in Africa, especially in bushveldt conditions.

Third, should your ammunition supply become lost in transit or should you run low on cartridges, it is much more likely that your PH will have .30/06 on hand than it is he will have .270.

I highly recommend taking two rifles. You can't go wrong with a well made controlled round feed rifle in .375 and a clone of it in .30/06 (or, I suppose, .270).

I agree with .416 Rigby. That's why I've decided to take my .35 Whelen (.30-06 necked up to .35 caliber) and a .30-06. I just bought a rifled barrel, for which I'm going to have some nice furniture made. Then I'll probably top it off with a Zeiss Conquest 3-10. The .35 Whelen has a Burris 1.5-6x32mm electrodot.

just came home form my plains game trip tp Namibia. Shot all my trophies with a cal. 270win with 150 grain. shot zebra, wildebeest, kudu, oryx, warthog, steenbuck, duiker, impala, jackal and 2 X springbuck.

Only the Zebra ran a considerate distance even with a heart bullet, but a killing shot.

Which goes to prove, shot placement is everything. I don't have a .270 Winchester, but have always wanted one. Then again, I have a 7x57 Mauser and a 7mm Rem Mag, which bracket the beast. Actually, I bought a nice Belgian-made Mauser Action last year, upon which I plan to build a close cousin to the .270 Win; the .280 Remington. Same case, same basic load. Just uses .284 caliber versus .277 caliber bullets, thus has the option of pushing the projectiles used up to a max of 175 grains, versus 150 grains, which is useful. But as long as the round is put in the breadbasket, no animal is really going to know the difference.

It is legal to use a .270 in Namibia, the 7 mm minimum is a recommendation by NAPHA (Namibia Professional Hunting Association) that everyone now quotes as a regulation. The actual law is a minimum energy (Eo - muzzle velocity) of 2700 Joule or roughly 2000 ft lbs muzzle energy for Hartebeest, Wildebeest, Kudu, Gemsbuck, Eland etc... with no caliber restriction. Springbok, Duiker etc... is half that at 1350 Joule. 5400 Joule for Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino etc...
