Anyone know what happened to these Elephant tusks?

Hello Johan. I have a photo of this same day. It was amongst photographs we found with Richard Kleyhans here in Zim. Apparently his uncle and my grandfather were mates and hunted together....nothing more was known about its origins...perhaps your grandfather and them were all mates?!! It would...

Govt puts Zimparks up for sale

That's not quite correct. The land that is now going to public / private partnerships is land like Hartley A and B ... Now defunct areas that have been poached out and that NP have not derived an income from in 20 years or more. Something has to be done with the land before it becomes just...

    Judging Cape Buffalo

Whilst I respect your opinion, each to his own. I was on a long range shooting page which included long range hunting. For me personally, long range hunting is shots out to 200m for plains game...out on the plains! But to others it's out to 700 plus. Not my cup of tea...but theirs. The thing...

I've just acquired a 6.5 x 57 by CZ. BRNO The gun made just prior to 1957. You seem to know a bit about them! Please share with me as info is fairly scarce! An idea of what the barrel twist is? 1:11? Thanks

    Bolt Action Stopping Rifles

99 % use Bolt guns...mostly because it's what they can afford. Doubles take a lot of getting used to in terms of fast reloading and they're mostly very heavy calibres. Doubles hold a significant advantage in a DG charge situation but the bolt gun is better for nearly everything else - imho!

    Professional Hunter Gun Safety

PH I know killed both his trackers with one round from his double doing just that... The African carry as it's sometimes called was meant for trackers to carry the loaded muzzle loaders of the old hunters like Selous. As they approached their quarry, the hunter would step up behind the tracker...

Zimbabwe kids hunt mice and sell them as tasty snacks

You guys are just spoiled!;) We ate em as kids. Along with Flying ants (termites), Butter bums, Quelia and lots of things we could find in the bush to trap or collect. Dry Maize roasted on a shovel. Wild mushrooms (Makowa) All sorts! The mindset worked well for me in the mid to late 70's!

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

Heck... lots whining in this thread! ! :) If you can't take the recoil... either down load it or don't buy one... you can't blame the tool if you can't handle it!!! The nice thing about them is there's plenty of case space to make your own dream load!

A question for the Professional Hunters - What makes a person a great client?

(y)(y) Tokkie... very well said and put! Things get out of kilter when people think that 'communication' has happened and been understood when it actually hasn't. Be sure to understand and be understood clearly. Don't just listen to reply! Patience is a virtue.

How to reload a big game rifle

If you change your DG gun often then you may have an issue with 'short stroking' presuming you're changing from short to long action ( .458 WM to .375H&H) for example. If you go the other way round you shouldn't have the problem. Practice and 'presence of mind' are key. We have a 'Panterror'...

Has your PH ever sent you out without him?

I left my clients to stalk on their own within visible and call distance in areas where there's no DG. It also depends on how proficient the client is and then only if we've singled out a single and particular trophy.
  26. O

Has your PH ever sent you out without him?

Yes I did once... the client and his new wife weren't getting much privacy in the tented camp... so I built a honey moon blind up in a huge tree overlooking a waterhole complete with creature comforts and left them there for the late afternoon hunt:giggle:... they had a ball.. the trophy arrived...

Shootist... not to detract from your comments, as a matter of interest, are you aware that 90% plus of Elephant 'culled' were shot with a 7.62 ( .308) using military ball ammo? Frontal brain shots on Big Cows and Side brain on Bulls. The .303 and .308 I believe are underestimated. I've sure...

Why are Weatherby guns in 375+ calibers not liked on a Safari?

Norway, don't sweat it... there's just no accounting for class!! ;) They are very fine rifles... a lot of them come with muzzle brakes which as PH's we don't really care for because of the back blast.

    .458 Winchester vs. .458 Lott

The challenge with the .458 WM has always been case capacity. Compressed loads lead to caking of the powder and potentially part ignition and squib loads. As a PH, I'd load my ammo fresh every year in my .458 WM. The only rifle I used consistently over a 20 year career. Never an issue and never...

I must correct my last submission! ! I indicated that the bolt had been redrilled as we had all discussed around the work bench. .... that didn't happen. Bolt action rifle: Failed to fire

Just to put it out there, recently a new rifle was built on an old action and we also experienced a 'fail to fire' with some of the ammo. On close inspection and after lots of debating, it was noted that the firing pin was not quite central to the bolt and so was striking to one side of the...
