I had opportunities on each and every one of those animals over water last month. I could have had more if I was specifically hunting any of those species.
My solution is similar. 71-72lbs. Great bow.
the key to the baboon was just staying as far back in the blind as possible and drawing away from the window. It took several tries. And they are very tough animals as well
So I booked this hunt back in November after talking my dad into accompanying me on my 5th hunt to RSA, and my second with Reon and ABS. A quick text to Reon and follow up email to Elmay and we were headed back. Our goals for this trip were archery buffalo for me and eland with an Xbow for my...
I was planning to take the 300 grain VPA single bevel, but so far have been unable to put an edge in them that I’m satisfied with. Contemplating a switch to the iron wills
My personal thoughts are that 1200gr is well beyond the point of diminishing returns. The Lusk archery channel has a good demonstration on how changing weight impacts drop. There are other things to consider beyond penetration alone
I took that to mean 750 as a minimum. I was planning for a TAW of 800-900 grains with FOC 25-30%. However, the final setup will depend on how they fly.
I’m headed over for buff in August. My outfitter recommended a total arrow weight of 750 grains.
I’m still experimenting with arrow/BH combinations but I am leaning towards the Vector HMR 250 spine with a VPA 300g broadhead to give me a total arrow weight of 860gn
Go to a bow shop and tell them what your requirements are. A good shop should have a variety of options for you. This is a good time to get a deal as frequently they are trying to get rid of 2021 models as the new bows have just released.
I just went through the process. It wasn’t easy, and...
I have taken 2 zebra, both with a .30-06. I was also present when my dad took his with a .30-06.
Bullet choice is important, as they are rather stout animals. My 1st zebra required 3 well placed shots due to poor bullet selection. We had be stalking bushbuck and did not exchange the 165gr...
Having hunted both in the past 3-4 years, if I was rifle hunting plains game I'd head to the Karoo and EC in a heartbeat. However, bowhunting I'd opt for the Limpopo.
I fletch all of my arrows with blazer vanes. The stingers are allegedly good heads but i prefer a 3 blade head. However, I have considered trying out the XL 2 blade broadheads that grizzlystik is selling for the next trip. With a 65lb draw your shouldn't run into too many issues with penetration
A reasonable outfitter would charge the price of the bull you thought you were shooting. PH calls it 44, they should charge for 44 since it was a mistake on their behalf. Especially when the price is more than double.
The newer tech is mostly marketing. I've taken thos arrows to Africa with no problems. For 6.50 each I'd buy several dozen for the next several years of target practice and whatever hunting I want to do.
Have not had good luck with Gurkha at all. The last one I tried would not stay lit, must've had to relight it 10x. Brother in law had similar issues with his. Flavor was meh at best
I suppose my issue is including warthog in that group. They have much stouter anatomy than the others mentioned and are significantly more resilient. I wouldn't advocate laser-fast arrows for warthogs as those sacrifice significant weight and therefore penetration to achieve high speeds which in...
I wouldn't include warthog with steenbok etc. They are built very differently. My personal opinion is that warthogs require a heavier arrow than most plains game and are not well suited for mechanical heads.
In my opinion, the bushbuck is Africa's version of the whitetail. The big rams are solitary and secretive and always on edge. Damn tasty too.
Warthogs are probably my favorite animal to hunt. The big boars are tough to take. They are also very fun to watch from the bow bind as well. No trip is...
I do it every time. I put the breakables in there as well. Pack clothes in around and on top until I hit the weight restriction. Everything else goes in a soft sided duffle.
Pretty sure April/May is not peak season in SA. Went mid may the past 2 years and was the first hunter of the season at each place. June through early August is what I'd consider peak season.
May has been good to me the last 2 years. I'm a few years from my next trip but I'll likely try for September. I dont think there is a bad time of year to hunt Africa. I think for bowhunters july and august are optimal due to decreased water in the bush though.
I use a older model SKB 60 in. long double rifle case ( similar to: https://www.skbcases.com/sports/sku.php?cat=9&pid=205). It's long enough to pack in cameras, optics, etc. Wide enough that I can bundle the arrows and pack them in with the bow and deep enough that I can pack a 2nd bow or take...
I'm lucky in the sense that I have short legs, but my dad has long legs so it especially bad for him.
The lodge was really nice. Their chefs are true artists as well.
