375 H&H and 458 Win Mag

450 Rigby stats look good. Never saw or used one. 458 Win/Lott easier [I think] to obtain in the states. Maybe in Africa or Australia it could be different.

The question is, do you want to hunt scrub bulls or STOP scrub bulls. A hunter would be quite happy with the better ballistics and the flat shooting of the 375HH. A professional in the bush hunting at close ranges or protecting loss of life day after day doesn't want a gun that will kill an animal in 60 seconds, they want one that will instantaneously kill an animal before it kills you.

The 375HH has much more versatility than the 458, and frankly is the world's most versatile caliber by most people's measure. It isn't the "perfect" choice for every application, but it will work in a pinch for everything from a 10lb Grysbok up to a 4 ton elephant.

For Australian use, I think the 375HH does a fine balancing act.
I think the same as rookhawk.

Fellas I think most are missing the OP's needs by failing to understand the question and reason behind it. Some are actually helping the authorities deny him the new calibre.

In Australia you need to justify why you NEED, not want, a calibre. In Western Australia the police are outright Stalinist in this regard. So the OP needs good reason to justify the purchase of any calibre. So in regard to the 458 while already having a 375 he needs to show, among other things, why the 375 is not adequate for certain game and the 458 is, without taking away his reason to have the 375.

If you are set on a 458 caliber rifle, why not get a 450 Rigby? It can make good use of heavy for caliber/mono bullets, and can achieve 458 Win/Lott ballistics with one hand behind its back.

I was going to ask why not go with 458 Lott?
If your rifle is chambered for 458 Lott, you can still shoot 458 WM if you have to.
Then I started looking at the ballistics and the 450 Rigby has more power.
If power is what you are after the 450 Rigby has it.
It would be easier and safer to download a 450 Rigby than try to achieve 450 Rigby ballistics with a 458 WM.

That is just messed up, plain and simple.

Your not wrong

The laws in Australia are continuing to be wake up calls to us in the USA. If we dont keep the Liberals out of power we will be facing the same.
Freedom of the right to bear arms is extremely fragile in this country and even tho I do not always agree with the present I do not allow myself to forget the consequences of the other.

Pls GET OUT THERE AND VOTE THIS MID TERM. Remember the above post.

Luvthunt, I agree about US citizens getting out and voting. Love or hate Trump now is the best time to severely damage the left anti freedom types. Give him such an over whelming victory that it send a clear message to the left that they need to rethink their stance.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

Hi guys
I have just been asked by some critics to thorough explain in plain and simple English why i would need a 458 win mag and the reasons why my 375 h&h would be inadequate for the purpose of hunting scrub bull , banteng , or water buffalo and the same why i would need a 30/06 when i have a 270 hope someone has a simple explanation as i have tried to put it as simple but thorough as could lol

First off I applaud your effort to expand your collection against the wishes of your wife/government. My answer to your conundrum would be a simple bending of the truth to people who probably don't know guns real well. The 270 can be loaded with 150 gn pills and work well for medium sized game, but they may not know this. If you load it with the 90-100 gn frangible bullets at 3600 fps+ its more of a varmint load. This gives viability to the 30-06 with 180 gn @ 2700 fps for your medium game load. With the 375 vs 458 I would argue based on the path of the bullet for an average round of each. I have attached a screen shot of the two from Nikon's spot on website to show the path different. It shows the 375 really has more range based on the flatness of the path. Alternatively you could say the 375 is for medium game anytime it is possible to run into dangerous game and the 458 is for when you are intentionally hunting dangerous game.

Finally, someone actually read and understood the o.p's intent.

I have travelled and hunted Australia extensively over the past 40 years, EXCEPT for W.A. Have never stepped foot on their soil and so long as my ass points to the ground, never will. Their (W.A) draconian firearms restrictions are beyond ridiculous.

When I was guiding buffalo in the N.T I would get two to three letters from W.A hunter/shooters per year asking for a letter of recommendation for them to try and achieve the "justification" requirements. Of-course I helped where I could.
Some got them and some didn't.

Here in Vic you can own what-ever you wish so long as you are licensed and are a member of an appropriate hunting organisation.

My suggestion would be to tell the authorities to %$#&%$-off, pull up roots sell everything and take your money out of the State and move over here !

I’ve hunted banteng with my 375 and used 300 grain Bullets. Adequate of course. These animals are not made of toughened steel.
My favorite is my 270 Sako and I used 30/06s for a long time.
The bigger caliber is handy when confronted with something mean and nasty!
The 270 has more crunch than the 30/06 I might add.
I also have a 416 rem mag which is a great cartridge for really big stuff but has what seems to be twice the recoil of the 375.
Suggest you keep what you have and without sounding condescending at all, practise to ensure great merciful shots without having to think. In other words have the rifle come up to your shoulder and fire at the intended target into its vitals automatically. This comes with practice.
