RARE PROTOTYPE WEATHERBY- 340 WBY MAG- BREVEX #23

This is a prototype rifle for the development of the 340 Weatherby Mag caliber. It utilized a Brevex action. Weatherby used Brevex actions for many of their early Magnum calibers. Brevex serial numbers used by Weatherby were in the 200 to 300 serial number range. This rifle is Brevex number 294. The barrel on this rifle is late Timken Bearing Company barrel made in 1957 before Weatherby started using J.P. Sauer and Son barrels at the time they introduced their Mark V actions. Weatherby introduced their 340 Wby Mag caliber in response to Winchester's 338 Win Mag caliber. Although this rifle has the Weatherby script logo and caliber designation, it has no Company serial number, which indicates it was for "in house" development purposes only.

its a welcome addition to my Brevex rifle collection.

What a nice find, congratulations.

The Wby book states that Brevex actions were used from 1956-1962 and the S/N range from 200-380 but only chambered in the .460 W.M. cartridge. So, this surely is an incredible find, especially when you consider that the .340 came out in 1963. That shows you how long he's been working on that cartridge before it was ready to be brought to market.

I was a member but didn't renew this year. I may have to renew. I know a fellow that has a Weatherby brevex in 378 cal. Winchester came out with the 338 win mag in 1958 so Weatherby likely started researching the 340 soon thereafter. It was officially announced in 1962.

Hello all,

Some years ago I purchased a prototype Weatherby 2.75x-10x scope. Its an original German Zielfernrohr Hertel & Reuss Macro-Ziel 2 3/4-10x 46 #1 German reticle. This scope has a 26mm tube. Later these scopes were made for Weatherby with a Weatherby Label and a 1" tube and a standard reticle. Its now mounted on this 340 Wby Mag rifle.

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
