Rhino Horn On Mount Use Original or Replica

Here is replica horn. To see the look of it.

This rhino cow is on display at bar at my outfitters place in Namibia.

Cow was killed by poachers, and horn taken.

They mounted the scull, and put replica horn.

I was fortunate enough to harvest a White Rhino this fall in RSA and was wondering if people use the real horns or replicas on killed rhinos. I am getting the skull and a replica for that bit was planning to use the real horn on a shoulder mount. What are thought and opinions from guys that have killed one, use real horn on mount or get replica and lock real horn in safe?
I recently caught up with a friend who hunted a magnificent white rhino bull ((Ceratotherium simum simum). He used the replica mount and added the original horn to that replica.

I will likely never shot a Rhino, but if I ever did, I would not want a horn anywhere near me, not even in a safe. When you look at the prices paid for the horns of wild rhinos on the black market, you can imagine what some people would be willing to do to get their hands on them.

Rhino horn has historically been reported at roughly $30,000–$65,000 per kilogram on the black market in Vietnam—about $14,000–$30,000 per pound. That range appears in a 2020 academic paper citing earlier research; it is not a verified current price.

They would have disappeared entirely in the U.S. long ago.

China and vietnam black trade market, were willing to pay for full legal hunt, say 35.000 usd plus, to get the horn, by fake hunter.

Ground black poacher for few hundred dollars is cheap compared for that.

That practise is known as pseudo hunting.

Having said that, most probably i will never shoot rhino, but i am.looking fwd for rhino darting in the future

The permit process is quite lengthy, letter from someone high up in SCI, all the shipping paperwork showing that African safaris previously taken were shipped to the US including all paperwork from US Fish and Game from the import side, a lengthy resume showing what you have hunted especially dangerous game wise are required for a permit and can take 6 months, the RSA government wildlife Dept even verifies everything and goes through US Consulate to check your background at least that what all I had to go through.

If I understand correctly, they pay you for your hunt if you deliver the horn. This is, all things considered, understandable, given that the price of the final product marketed within the Chinese medicine extremely high is and the profit margin enormous.

There was a famous case when they paid vietnam prostitute working in south africa, to get a permit, then ph shot the rhino, and horn went to vietnam..

Discuting practise.

real horn on skull or desk mount. replica on shoulder mount since its more likely to be further from viewer. I saw that set-up in a trophy room many years back. Converted barn with old wood beams and the horn and skull fixed at shoulder height to one of the big old timbers in the loft bar. Its a hellava feeling to savor a glass of your favorite brown liquor with your hand on the horn.... I was 24 or 25 at the time and have never forgot it.

So… here’s an idea
1) do your mount and maybe do replica
2) have you seen just the skull with the two horns sitting on it? Basically a European Rhino Skull Mount ? They look great IMO
I would strongly consider (and am long term)

Exactly what I saw and it looks great. I had t seen your post when I just said same thing

As a taxidermist that has dealt with this just a few times do replica horns casts from original and I would recommend a finished fiberglass mount, tremendously lighter, save a fortune in shipping tanning etc, and they look fantastic

I agree. Plus there are quite a few underwhelming shoulder mounts of rhino and hippo out there -I mean no disrespect to the taxidermists who take them on they are just extremely difficult to work with . the best (realistic & lifelike) rhino shoulder mounts I have seen were fiberglass replicas. The skull mount and/or natural horn mounted in a european boar style is a high impact part of any collection

Tough decision, I will never hunt one but my initial thought was to leave it intact. Both for authenticity and respect to the animal.

After reading through its valued at far more than I realised putting you in a difficult position

I would mount replica and put the horn in a safe.

Years ago I read a US fish and game reports about how agents had broken into a hotel room and found a man trying to pry the horn off an antique Rhino mount he had illegally purchased.

You could mount the real horns and tell everyone they're repros

question about rhino hunts, is there such a thing as a non exportable? similar to elephants. for some reason Dart does not interest me. but i also don't know that I need the real horn either and just sounds like post hunt hassle. so wondering if a non exportable option exists that actually hunting like what I will probably target for elephants to save money.

No this doesn’t exist because there’s no legal market for the byproduct (horn/hide) and Rhinos aren’t over carrying capacity.

With non exportable/non trophy elephants Zim has a secondary legal trade market for Ele leather and ivory. There’s a financial incentive or conservation/population control reason.

At present, if you want a Rhino you pony up and pay to hunt one, or you dart one. The later is under some scrutiny because there are some outfitters who’ve abused the darting to for monetary gain rather than conservation.

Once you harvest a rhino, it is put in your name, and the horn is serialized and microchipped all connected to your name

Noah,
I might be interested in the 470 Woodleigh Softs if the price is right for the entire lot. Are you planning on going to the Tulsa Gunshow in November? If so, perhaps we could meet up.
