The Cannon Myth: Why I'd Rather Hit Than Bruise

Finally, carry everywhere you go, even inside the home (if only a subcompact).
Choose a serious caliber, such as .40, 10mm, or a hot .45 P+.
This carry inside the home intrigues me, I live in a safe neighbourhood, I do have a loaded gun within reach somewhere hidden. So, I'd like to know why would you advise to all time carry-in the house?
and
what benefits does a 40, 10 have for self protection over a 9mm? BTW all I have are 9mm's.

IDPA is great, keep it up! As far as what would remain respectable run times for you at 55 y/o, I can't quite say. Have your basics down, and practice often; speed will emerge from that. You're not likely to outdraw a dedicated 25 y/o IDPA guy, but that's OK. Truly, you merely have to outdraw your street assailant.

Although we all slow down with age (and I'm older than you), we can largely compensate for that on the street by staying very alert and aware, and trusting the gut when a situation doesn't feel right. Just leave; you don't have to know why it's not right. If you notice a Bad Guy before he notices you, you've already won. If you both notice each other simultaneously, then an armed well-trained/practiced Good Guy will likely win. Just don't get surprised by an Orc.

Finally, carry everywhere you go, even inside the home (if only a subcompact).
Choose a serious caliber, such as .40, 10mm, or a hot .45 P+.

Thanks for the question, best of success to you.
Thanks for reply. My question was just sport competition related.

In a place (country) where I live (Croatia), it has been years, since a gun has been drawn in self defense. And I am saying this about a country wide records, recent history.
There are cops who never draw u gun in the line of duty. Very safe streets.
Gun crimes are rare and mostly related to criminals from drug community, their affairs.

But admittedly, my friends from PD department are strongly suggesting me to make CCW.

These are the more realistic scenarios. Not two gunman drawing on each other in a western. And if you’re drawing on somebody that’s 30 feet away and shooting them you’re probably going to jail.
Close quarter draw is a vital technique, but it does assume that you let an assailant get within arm's reach of you. That should be nearly impossible in Condition Yellow. Mide''s drawstroke is a bit different than a classic Speed Rock. I like the Guard and circling technique.

On another forum, the 9mm Boyz were giving this "Fudd" a bunch of crap because I prefer the 10x25mm. What produced <crickets> from them was a video by the respected "GarandThumb1" testing the 10mm. He was blown away by its terminal ballistics:

Dude, I'm 100% in; I'm carrying this. Dude, tell me anybody's going to get up! No one's getting up. You know how many rounds I can carry? Fifteen 10mm rounds. We have an MVP 2.0 10mm.

The 10mm really needs a 5" barrel (the Glock 29 was effectively reduced to a .40), so concealment can be an issue. I wear mine at 3 o'clock in a duty holster (sometimes IWB), underneath a vest or jacket.

In a suit, I'll IWB a slim single-column mag .40.

There are no "safe" neighborhoods. Perhaps safer ones, but nothing is 100% safe.

A home invasion can be very sudden because the occupants are in Condition White (that's what being at home is all about). Although I have guns throughout the house, if I weren't wearing one it'd take me time to decide which gun to choose and then getting there. I'm at risk of not grabbing it in time. I certainly always have a belt gun when I walk outside on my property.

Regarding calibers, a hot 9mm with great bullets will probably suffice. Don't lose any sleep over it.
I just prefer larger and more powerful rounds. Bad Guys are the ultimate dangerous game....

Interesting that you live in Croatia. If you can CCW there, I'd recommend it.
You may never need a gun, but if you ever do you'll need it very badly and the downside to not having it is infinite (your life).

I've never been in a head-on car crash and gone through the windshield, but I still wear my seat-belt.

I hear you, and I do not disagree.

Thats what my PD friends are saying.
Bad times are coming.

They have overview on the illegal immigrations.
Luckily we are transit country for illegal immigrants, their destination countries are Italy, germany, france, uk and sweden mainly. But that can change soon.
Moreover, recently more and more often they are caught crossing border with guns...

What is your view on: speed vs accuracy vs age of shooter, I am asking because that question reflects my own doubts

Speed vs accuracy - I noted "speedy Gonzaleses" miss very often.
Age: youngsters vs seniors: youngsters are faster, but miss often.

I am 55 years old, and I am slacking on speed.
And I am thinking, I am loosing competitivness, thus the question.

Mostly active in idpa and steel challenge, but philosophy is the same.
Dry fire is your friend. I still dry fire almost every day and can do a "Bill Drill" under 2 seconds at age 70. Though my days of 0.11 splits are very rare now. However running through a course is definitely slower compared to decades ago, though for IDPA and steel challenge run speed is immaterial.

It seems that carrying a firearm is becoming a necessity these days, given the way things are going with all the shootings and violence. Almost like carrying a cell phone something you feel you ought to have with you, just in case. A rather sad reflection of the times we live in.

If I felt I had to walk around my house armed, I’d freaking move.

No no no no no, SStomcat, you do not get to re-write the facts and play victim

I’ll admit the frustration. This thread could have been a useful discussion about DG rifles. Instead, it became a referendum on who’s allowed to hold an opinion unchallenged.

This did NOT become "a referendum on who’s allowed to hold an opinion unchallenged".

This became a referendum on we have enough of SStomcat lecturing, patronizing, demeaning, insulting other members.

Remember what you posted?

Unwanted thought, irrerelavant to my post.
No one is confused except perhaps yourself.
Talking to you is like talking to a wall at least a wall has the good sense to stay quiet when it has nothing intelligent to add.
You really are a class act- "one of a kind", really.

You are persona non grata in this thread, yet you keep coming back with your self-professed wisdom, apparently unable to resist rubbing it in.
...
Do yourself a favor stay away. No one is waiting for your next contribution, and trust me, you won’t be missed. ROFL
See what an unscrupulous person you are, digging for others information and hiding your own profile.
Just don’t turn this thread into a sales pitch for your personal bullet preferences when the discussion has absolutely nothing to do with bullets.

There are plenty of threads for that. No need to sneak the marketing campaign into this one.
Good, I hope you get bored and leave the people who want to discuss something productive alone.
If that’s all it takes to earn the label, then apparently “trolling” now just means not agreeing with you.
I thought you were a gentleman, boy I was wrong. I do remember some instances of you complaining and people talking about your condascending behaviour.
It’s actually quite impressive you manage to sound supremely confident while being spectacularly clueless.
yes old man, when I know Im much younger than you. What is ur problem?
To me, you’re a wannabe hunter who shoots what you like.....
you’re just too obnoxiously dumb to recognize it.

etc. etc. etc.

YOU are the one who imposed this antagonizing trend on "your" thread. Do not come crying on Jerome's shoulder now that some of us decided to confront you about it.

You can have whatever opinion you want about the subject matter, this is not the issue.

The issue is that your behavior is a shame to the AH spirit.

And blaming now others who finally had enough of you, falls right in line with your bullying all along.

And yes, I am not letting you off easy, because I hate what you are doing, refusing responsibility for your acts, and blaming others for their consequences.

But go ahead, jump on the diversion that miraculously popped up, and share with us now your wisdom about defensive pistol shooting. I am sure that you are as much an expert on this matter as you are on DG hunting and DG rifles.

I apologize to other members for bringing this back one last time, but sometimes, especially in our ever more politically correct, woke, irresponsible society, people like
SStomcat must be reminded to be careful as you never know when folks will actually respond in kind. Moving on :)

Let me finish on the lighter side...

If you carry. Get insurance in case you have to use your weapon. Also learn what to do and what not to do after a shooting.

Contrary to tv police shows or movies. The attorney doesn’t bolt through the door to your rescue. You will be on your own for some time.
So what you say or don’t say is critical

An interesting parting shot. You manage to combine an apology, a sermon on responsible behavior, and a veiled warning in one paragraph. Disagreement, after all, is not a personal vendetta, and a difference of opinion does not require a character assessment.

But if “respond in kind” is meant to imply something beyond an exchange of words on a hunting forum, perhaps you should be rather more explicit about what you mean. Vague insinuations are easy to make; standing behind one's actual words is a different.
There is also a certain irony in lecturing someone about responsible behavior while choosing to finish with a remark that can readily be interpreted as a warning. If the intention was simply to encourage civility, there are considerably less ambiguous ways of expressing it.

I have never expected everyone to agree with me, nor do I expect everyone to like my style. I can be blunt, sarcastic, and occasionally irreverent. That comes with participating in an open discussion. But I don't confuse disagreement with hostility, and I don't believe anyone is entitled to silence another member simply because they dislike what he has to say.

Otherwise, let's indeed move on.

If we're moving on, let's do so properly. Without the sermon, without the insinuations, and without the parting shot.

I do understand your point. Im not an attorney, so have no idea, but would like to understand how insurance can help in these situations?

With what? A 9mm, 10mm, .45 ACP?

You as thread moderator should lock this down. It no longer even remotely resembles your intent.
There is not such thing as a thread moderator. Also, after some pages just about all threads drift.

I concur. I subscribe to the same guys for legal representation. I also have my own attorney on retainer and these guys would pick up his bill.

From Buzz Charlton site-

On how to estmate the size of a tusk or how difficult it may be from pictures.
People ask me to estimate size of an ele from a pic and the answer is it’s nearly impossible!
The reason is a lot of people put thier cameras on the 0.5 zoom setting making the trophy look massive . I have done in the past but in reality the trophy is the trophy and we should be proud of it as it is !
The top pic is a stunning 55 lbs ele taken as a normal pic -the bottom pic is the 0.5 setting looks like a 90 lbs !!
So next time you are amazed with “ huge” ele on social media think twice !!

This isn’t drift. It’s a tidal wave.

But, I’m picking up what you’re throwing down.

What insurance do you recommend for CCW?

ETA: Oops! Sorry I see you already gave your endorsement. I just responded to the notification that you quoted my post.

Carry on.
