@Steppone this is such an exciting journey! I just purchased my first double, chambered in .470! It is all about the romance of the journey itself. Enjoy every part of it.
I worked in the medical field for a decade and was at the deathbed of countless folks. Nobody ever regretted chasing a dream or fixation. The only regrets were playing it safe, not living fully, and not realizing sooner that the journey is all there is.
As @Wildwillalaska correctly said, everybody has their own opinions, and everyone is correct. That also means nobody knows what is best for YOU, except for YOU.
In the end, if you can place a .500 grain bullet well, you can kill anything on Earth. If you can get a double that has the appropriate weight, the recoil is very manageable for a .500 NE. So, it just boils down to what makes you happy, and what you train with.
Forget practicality. We don't hunt dangerous game because it is practical. Buy whatever gun scratches that itch, not what is practical hahaha.
Best of luck! Keep us posted!
