Rolex- the stupidest, lamest company

I finally pulled the trigger on the GMT II “batgirl”. Like I said in my previous post, I’ve wanted one for many years and just never got around to buying one. Originally I was going to buy it for my 50th birthday. The warranty card was dated the day my dad went in for open heart surgery in the latter part of June. He passed away from complications from that surgery on July 17th. It’s been kind of hard to see this watch as anything other than something that reminds me of him even though it wasn’t bought for that purpose. I wear it everyday and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Wonderful piece, congratulations. I think the jubilee bracelet is the ticket on a GMT

In my more boring, non-hunting, life, I keep an eye on recent judgments in commercial litigation.

A recent one is Swatch v. Samsung, and involves various brands of the Swatch group (including Breguet, Blancpain, Omega, etc.) suing Samsung, maker of a smart watch. The problem arose that third parties could, and did, produce watch faces for the Samsung watch that copied the trade marks of the various Swatch brands. The question in this case was how much should Samsung pay for this infringement ('quantum'). It is not a particularly interesting question to have answered, but there is one interesting aside from an expert witness, Mr. Forbes, acting for Swatch. He is quoted in the judgment, at item 17:

I did give the example in my report of Tudor and Rolex. If Rolex is the king of the Swiss watch brand in terms of market value, I know from my experience that if you want a Rolex and you cannot afford for the name, you can essentially buy a Rolex watch but it is branded Tudor for half the price. Now, it is not presented like that to the market, but that is the truth behind it.

I have the exact same 40mm, superb!

This is a 1998 Swiss only dial 36mm. I have a late 80s early 90s Rolex fan. I enjoy them more so that the newer models. That era of Rolex had the newer movement designs but still had the look and feel of the older models. They aren’t perfect. The bracelets have the classic jingle jangle. The clasps are still stamped. Non of the “on not a fake Rolex” built into the watch.

The new watches are better watches. But too perfect for me.

As an unabashed Omega fanboy, it pains me to admit that the current Rolex Oyster bracelet and clasp are absolutely stunning.

Not enough to get me to buy one, but still…

The older stamped ones, not so much.

I prefer them. There is a charm to them that mates with the charm of the watch. Tudor makes an excellent bracelet as well.

Tudor's current stuff hits a nice middle ground, solid without turning the whole watch into a polished appliance.

I have the Rolex 40mm explorer 2025 model and I am astounded by the accuracy. It is keeping to about a minute a month. Is this normal? I wear it all the time, just take it off to bath.

Not sure if it's normal for your movement, but I just went 3 months without re-setting the time on my 2013 Omega PO and it gained just over 3 minutes over that time. A few years ago it was just 15 seconds fast over the same 3 months so I might be looking at a service for it.

Was scrolling and ran across this. Do you agree?

AP is a waaay better wrist watch. Personally i will place Omega over Rolex too.

Absolutely, in the serious watch collector´s world, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin are known as the three Apostles, the rest come behind

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
