I am planning to return for the second time in May of 27, I am using the same hunting travel agent. My experience this year was the flights were a bit higher than I could book myself, this time the quotes are double? Has anyone had this experience? My choice is to book on my own or try another agency, I can't afford the quote I was given.

Appreciate any advice,

Mike

Are you looking to fly coach, premium economy or business? For my flight to JNB last month I saved 1500.00 by adding one extra day. Next month to Bulawayo I am saving over 2000.00 by adding one extra day, these were on business fares. If you haven't tried, perhaps entering dates a day or two different in coming and going may save you some money. Gracy Travel charges 300 a ticket and PWP charges 250 a ticket to handle your flights.

I have only been to Africa once and it was South Africa AND I didn't take my own rifle. So I'm not an expert. But I don't understand paying a travel agent to do something I can do online in 30 minutes.

I'm sure there are cases where I'm wrong, but I'll always book my own travel.

What agency are you working with?

I have had something somewhat similar happen. Not double, but slightly higher at times. Sometimes this is accounted for by if you go all the way through the booking, suddenly when you go to choose return trips the only ones that work are more expensive, or sometimes the price being shown on the website is for non-changeable tickets and if you want changeable (non-refundable) the ticket can be much more.

It depends. If you are flying with no rifle direct to Johannesburg and then being picked up by an outfitter, then there is very little risk of making a costly mistake.

If you are flying to other areas or countries after you land in Johannesburg, are taking a rifle, need to overnight in hotels along the way. Then there is a larger chance of making a mistake that causes you issues. It is still 100% doable by yourself. But it is much easier with a travel agent if doing all those things.

Flights are way higher than last year. I know my Delta flight was $1500 -1800 more than 2025 flights booked in 2024. This year I played what I call the Delta gamble.
I use @TRAVEL EXPRESS Jennifer for all my bookings. I just had her find me the cheapest coach seats I could get about 2 months ago for May 2027. I then watched my Delta app.
Was given upgrade offers over the next 60 days. I would upgrade each leg Houston Atlanta then JNB as an offer came up I liked.
I moved from back of plane middle seat to Comfort Plus aisle seats for a total of $689 plus 5000 miles. Total savings over booking Comfort direct when original booking date was $1769
Also. Watch days flying. Thursday- Sunday are higher. Also time of day shopping for flight and day of week. Monday-Wed. Early mornings I find cheapest rates
It only takes one hiccup and a travel agent can be a life saver. So I pay their fees to have them if I need them

Personally I book all my own travel but I have been flying around the globe for the nearly 30 years for my job so I kinda know how the game is played and I have high enough status with the airline that I get help from them when there is a problem.

@Andrew62 is exactly right, you can often save quite a bit of money if you just slide your travel date(s) by a day or 2 either way.

@Mizzou100 - if you are an experienced traveler probably should book yourself using tools like Google Flights, if not, I would follow @Mark Biggerstaff's advice and use an agent, and if you can, give the agent a little leeway with the dates.

My son actually uses an AI, no SI, agent to do the flight searches for him and often can find a lower cost option.

You will understand once you have a trip go wrong. The $250 Patrick charges when needed is an absolute bargain.

I was planning on booking premium economy, and I will play around with the day. Thank you

I am trying to use Gracy travel, I have good luck with them in the past, but the quoted price for the same flights (their quote includes flight from Joberg to Port Elizabeth to be fair) is almost double for what I get online?

I am going to call the other suggested agency tomorrow, appreciate the suggestion.

I always do my own booking, usually way cheaper that way and I've never had any issues.

Not Africa but I recently booked my wife and I flights from uk to Argentina. I waited until new flights came available, usually 11 months outs, to be one if the first to book business class seats - this yields the best prices I could find if i amended dates a little.

I am all for 250 or even more, the flights i am being quoted vs what i find on line is thousands more.
That’s been my experience as well when I’ve checked with several of the agencies. I always book my own travel, and when I checked with agencies, I already knew which airline, date and times I wanted to fly, giving them the flight number. BUT…was more than happy to pay the $250 and $300 for their services, just to double check my intended route for possible pitfalls and have a person to call when shit goes sideways on a trip.

BUT…it wasn’t just their service fee, the fares were significantly higher like 25-40% each time I checked for three trips in a row. Last time I didn’t even bother calling to check and this trip departing next week I just booked myself as well. If something falls apart, my misses is as capable as I am at sorting travel options, so back in April when I changed my trip part way through and moved to a different country and extended my return date. Delta proved a nightmare so just cancelled and with Iran calming-ish, returned on Qatar for a much easier and pleasant experience.

I think it’s perfectly fine to use an agent if that’s your preference. I like to look at all my options when deciding dates, times, etc., want more information and control in the decision and management of my travel, so I just prefer to do it myself. So it’s a big step to convince me to relinquish my micro-management control…harder still if charging me some hidden premium on top the disclosed service fee to do so.

All that said…I’m also the weirdo who has no hesitation in spending copious amounts of money on brass, bullets, guns, hunts, but hates paying for business or first class. I don’t particularly like crowds or being cramped with bunches of folks, not even cities, so I don’t love coach, don’t love business, don’t love first class, not even the pods and the like. Do it if with the misses because she likes it, but if just me, I’ll stick to a few of my preferred coach seats. Same level of displeasure, just lower rate. Even flying with the misses, I’d prefer one of my favorite coach seats over the pod…but she’d get bent if I didn’t fly up front with her…not hypothetically, I tried it once, she wasn’t a fan.

Guess it’s really simple. I don’t mind spending money on things I care about or make me happy. Fare class isn’t one of them for me. I like boarding early and extra bags, but I get that through frequent flyer/OneWorld status.

It’s like the agent assist…on seat class, do what makes you feel covered, secure, happy, or whatever derived benefit you find in it.

In prime.srason, around august prices jump high.
That is, in normal years.

Now, we have jet fuel shortages and prices sky rocketking, and every price is possible, plus prime season usual pricing.

There are online applications like flight scanner that can help you find the cheapest option.
Also try contacting few travel.agencies and get their goutes

That is the one thing I have felt irritated towards travel agents at times. When I call and give dates, preferred airlines, seating etc. And then they throw out a number that is much higher than what I am seeing the flights listed for.

I generally then say, "I'm seeing similar flights for around X price". Usually then they find flights around that same price. I find that irritating. Hard to believe you didn't see those lower priced flights listed there a minute ago. However, I do like not having to go on Delta, Airlink, Hotel, and gun permits websites and book with each one separately.

That said, I see the other side as well and I am fully prepared to not use them if they can only find flights that are 25% more expensive. I also don't use them when I am not traveling with guns (renting), or have less complicated flights with guns.
