Good evening
My son and I will be travelling to New Zealand to hunt chamois and tahr in March 2027.
We will be getting in a couple days before our hunt is set to begin. Our outfitter is tied up with his other clients until our hunt starts. Does anyone have any recommendations of day trips for sightseeing, hunting or fishing that we could do based out of Christchurch while waiting for our hunt to start?
Open to anything really. Just would like to experience something other than hanging around town or hotel for a couple days.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would bet if you looked on Viator.com you could find numerous outdoor/adventure type tours or activities being offered in the area

Thanks MontanaPat. I did check out Viator. Lots of sightseeing options for sure. Was hoping more for a fishing or hunting experience for the day if possible but will keep checking the sightseeing tours out as well in case something jumps out at me.
Appreciate it.

It might be worth a quick phone call to Yellow Dog Flyfishing to see if they could help you with a day trip of fishing. They are a well known fly fishing booking agency here in Bozeman MT and work with numerous lodges in New Zealand. Their average trips are week long trips but maybe they could put you in touch with a lodge or guide who would do a one off day since that is getting later in their season. Worth a phone call that costs nothing.

I will check them out.
Thanks for the info.

There was a farmer in the Banks Peninsula who also worked as a professional hunting guide. He used the previous model of Blaser bolt-action with the side-feeding magazine for his .22 long rifle barrel. I had a chat with him at a gunshop next to our workshop. Seemed quite on to it. Call the main Gun City shop in Christchurch if you cannot find him in a search.

There's more than a few reputable charter boats operating out of the Christchurch area. If I wasn't going in the dead of winter (Ignorance on my part) I'd already be booked to fish. Good luck!

Love Christchurch
Just spent the morning there
To be honest I’d spend a day there looking around the parks, earthquake museum etc and then if you can’t get any local hunting sorted maybe hop on a plane and see some of the rest of the island.
Where are you going to be hunting near and how many spare days do you have??
Flights are cheap and very easy

Thanks for the suggestions. We only have a day and a half before our hunt starts. May spend the half day looking around town and I think I have a fishing charter lined up out of Kaikoura for the full day.
My outfitter also thought he may be able to squeeze in a goat hunt before we head into the back country.
We are really looking forward to it and I will be sure to post a report after we get back.

While you're in town consider dropping in to Hunting & Fishing, the gun-shop.

Excellent display of firearms, hunting and fishing equipment, clothing, camping gear and an excellent display of Trophies. Well worth it.
Easy two hour visit !

Be careful of this Wolfen guy. 2 messages. Both trying to sell something. He PM'ed me trying to sell something and he PM'ed my friend on here trying to sell something. Fishy.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
