Best of luck.

alright guy's we got back friday wee hours and i've got a little time to get started.
We left on a friday flew to atlanta then on to copenhagen. toured around Copenhagen for the afternoon then went back to the clarion at the airport to rest a little before an early flight to Kangerlussuaq When we landed in greenland Hanne Ling's was waiting to pick us up at the airport.
She explained that there was a slight change in plans and that karsten was coming back from camp this afternoon. We would fish in the fjord tomorrow and go to camp the day after. The next day we met up with three hunters who had just left camp and went out to fish in a picturesque bay in the fjord.
two of the hunters were father and son Mike and Marshall, very nice gentlemen from Mississippi.
Marshall was set on river fishing for Arctic char even though Karsten kept telling them it was to late and they would not be biting. we dropped them off at the back of the bay and they hiked about a mile to a small river and fished for char. We got poles out and started trolling and watching the fish finder. When we got into fish you couldnt reel them in fast enough. we fished for about four hours and when Karsten had finished cleaning we had about 50 lbs of the prettiest cod fillets you have ever seen. When Mike and Marshall and Nunu came back to the boat they were carrying all the Arctic char they could carry!
I forgot to mention Nunu she is a family friend of the lings and would be accompanying us to camp.
That night we had a lovely meal at Karsten and Hanne's home with delicious food and great company!

I forgot to mention that we visited the ice pack our first day in greenland! it is vast and inexplicably
beatiful! it is like standing by the ocean except it's frozen lol. Truly one of Gods great creation marvel's!
Gotta go mow i'll try to get a little further this evening!

The next day we headed to the hanger loaded the chopper and headed the 15 or so miles to camp.
The helicopter ride was awesome and gave us a glimpse of some of the terrain we would be hunting in.
Blunt snow capped mountains lots of mountain lakes scrub brush and no tree's. The perma-frost is less than a foot deep so not much in the way of vegitation. I will have to tell you I underestimated the steepness of the terrain we were hunting and the distanves we would travel. But thats another day, as we landed at the edge of camp I was delighted to see small wooden structures that would be our accomodations the next several days! We unloaded the chopper and dropped our gear at our 8x12
sleeping quarters (that was insulated and had a heater!!!). Met a few hunters who were in camp already
and just settled in. Now I have to tell you that one of the hunters already in camp was Simon Roosevelt,
Great great grand son of Teddy Roosevelt. Who is probably my most adored american hero! What a cool experience to meet a descendant of someone you hold in such high regard!
We had only been in camp about an hour when Adam one of the guides says he see's what looks like a nice muskox bull across the lake in the spotting scope. five of us huddle up and discuss an approach.
we settle on a plan and were off. We walk half way around the lake then drop lower right to the shoreline. we close the distance maybe another five hundred yards to where we last saw them on the flat thirty or so yards above us. We scale upwards slowly and as quiet as possible. there are about fifteen muskox in the group so a lot of eyes. six or seven yards below the crest we stop and discuss
the plan. I had shot a arctic hare in town the night before so it was jeffs turn on the trigger. He and adam eased up and peered over the edge. the muskox were about seventy five yards away and oblivious to our presence. They eased a pack up and got the rifle set and the rest of us crept up to
see the shot. jeff waits till the old bull is clear and takes the shot, He doesnt go down immedediately
so jeff sends another round and he drops! The rifle is suppressed so most of the other animals wernt
even spooky. We are all excillerated but Adam turns around and says omg theres three bulls on the slope behind us maybe seven hunndred yards away. He says Malik take kevin over there and get a better look that boys. We slip back down to th shore line and run twards were the bulls were.
When we think we are at the closest point we can get to where the bulls were we climd thirty or so yards up the bank until we can see them. Malik glasses for a few minutes and says the lead bull is deffinently a shooter. We crawl another thirty yards and lay down. I push my pack forward and Malik puts the rifle on the pack. I get on the gun find him in the scope but he is standing in front of a younger bull. We laid there for what seemed an eternity till finally he clears from the other bull.
Malik says if your good take him. I breathe and squeeze, he ran ten steps and collapsed.
And just like that we have two bull musk ox down two hours after landing!!!
They aged jeffs bull at fourteen and mine at twelve exactly the kind of animals you want to take!!

Thanks for the update. I like the muskox sometimes underrated for somebody but definetly if you have the chance to hunt It your mind change and specially if you hunt in the awesome Greenland a place that just to stay there you know that you are experience the wildness.
Beautiful trophies, congrats, keep updating the story

Congrats, very nice trophy.
I enjoyed the interesting report & pictures, thanks for sharing. This hunt is on my list.

Congrats! Did you take your own rifles or did you use camp guns? Any details on the guns, optics and ammo would be much appreciated. A hunt like this is on my bucket list.

we used camp rifles because of traveling through copenhagen. Mine was a sako 300 wm suppressed
with leupold scope, very nice setup and quite sufficient! The travel really is the tricky part of this hunt. greenland is not a simple destination.
We hunted with Lings greenland hunting and I cant sing their praises enough!!!!

The next day we start our hunt for caribou, Breakfast at 8:00 make sandwiches of leftovers and out the door. It is decided that jeff and I will go out together with two guides, Adam and Malik. We head north
starting by boat navigating the first smaller lake then we hike fifty yards and get in the second boat and put some miles between us and camp. The weather is beautiful :E Cold: it is snowing so hard visibility is about thirty feet!

When we get to the end of the lake we beach and start hiking. Temps are about fifteen degrees.
The terrain was fairly level at first and then we started climbing. I had been walking three to four miles a day to prepare for this trip, well that was laughable! We walked about fifteen miles that day. We actually saw a lot of muskox and some caribou but only one shooter bull. We were glassing from a knoll when malik spotted the bull at fifteen hundred yards. WE started a course to intercept but about halfway ran out of any cover. Malik and Adam decide our best option is to drop down on a lake shore and close as much distance as we can. We close some distance and climb back up to look, were at four seventy with no great options. We look at the bull as close as possible and jeff isnt sure. I said well i'll take him and we start looking for ways to close the distance. The bull walks behind a small bench and Malik says lets go. We are running in a half crouch as hard as we can when the bull comes back into sight. we dive foreward and get the gun on a pack, Malik ranges him at two hundred and fifty yards. The bull knows we are there and shifts around nervously. I get him in the scope and my heart is pounding the scope rises and falls with every breath.I try to steady and Malik says if you are comfortable hold four inches high. I shot and the bull spins and runs. Malik says you shot right in front of him, it happens. well the rest of that day sucked for me as I replayed the shot over and over, questioning everything. at the end of thr day I rushed a shot that was far from optimal anyway. Poor judgement on my part.
Spent the rest of the day breathing hard and questioning myself.

Sounds like you had a great hunt!

Hunted with Karsten in 2015. GREAT hunt. We walked everywhere from camp because the rivers were so low the boats were of no use. Everything from the helicopter ride in to the camp and the total remoteness of the area made it a very unique experience.

The facilities were very plush! DSCN0922.jpeg

The walking was tough as I had just finished cancer treatment less than 4 months before the hunt. Karsten was a great guide and we had a lot of time & put on a lot of miles together before I shot my bull.

Didn't get a caribou, but we did go back to Kangerlussuaq a day early and were able to go to an all Greenland food buffet. I found my absolute favorite red meat is Beluga whale.

So the next day starts much the same breakfast at 8:00 but today we will seperate to up our odds.
Today we hike right out of camp and it gets difficult right away. Now dont get me wrong it wasnt crazy just more up and down than I had expected. Malik and I hike about four miles before we see our first caribou. The temps are milder and the sun is shining and we have beautiful blue skies above. We continue making our way north when Malik spots a nice bull. WE glass him from about seven hundred yards away. he is just feeding along a gentle slope, between a lake and a steep slope.
He is feeding right twards us with about ten other cows and calfs. Malik says we can wait on him but the winds not good. He says we have to go around the mountain and come up behind them.
Malik says its not steep and I laugh and say Malik I can see it you liar. he laughs and says its not as steep as it looks. we move up the slope as fast as I can with Malik urging me on. When we summit we skirt along the backside on very small trails with very steep drops. We get to a saddle and work our way around to where the herd should be. We cant find them. We start cautiously working in the direction we though they had gone. Then out of nowhere we see the bull he is almost directly below us!
Malik ranges him and he is 80 yards straight down. We find a rock and set a pack and I get on the gun.
Im breathing hard again but this time I force myself to slow down. the angle is steep and I try to vision the vital area. Take a breath hold and squeeze hes down! My dreams of taking a caribou since childhood have just been realized!

That's a great caribou for the area. Yes the "hiking" is not as simple as it looks. Good for you sticking it out and the reward at the end!

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
