What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

Even as a child my Dad suggested I carry a pocket knife. All the country ranch boys did carry one. I still do. I use it for something daily or someone I am with uses it. A good example once at a formal white tie affair someone needed a knife instantly. I pulled a small folder out of my formal vest and took care of the problem. I think of pocket knife as a convenient tool, not a weapon. If I do not have one I will need one for sure.

I think this thread has gotten a little sidetracked in some ways, but that’s perfectly okay.
My OP was not really about whether one should carry a knife in the bush. To me, the answer to that is unequivocally yes.
My question was more about whether, given the tools and equipment available today, a small knife and/or a good-quality multi-tool would be sufficient for the practical tasks one is likely to encounter, rather than carrying a larger dedicated knife.
That was really the point I was trying to explore.

I will never take a knife to knife fight :A Wink:

@mdwest - very cool idea. Add me to the rotation roster.

@baxterb can you tell us more about that knife?
I really like the dimensions and shape.

It was made by Charleton Damascus in North Carolina. The American version has a 4” blade and the African version has a 5”. They still make them.

Like a lot of folks I first saw Peter’s version in his Sands of Silence book and also the video and I just thought it had a very good design. His has ivory and I wish mine did. I believe they have used corian, horn, giraffe bone as well. Funny enough, I had never seen a rosewood version until I saw this.

I have yet to sharpen it since I got it, so can’t comment on how it takes/holds an edge.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
