Honestly, folks can use whatever the heck they want. There are plenty of deer killed every year with Tasco scopes with the cheapest ammo on sale from Walmart. If the scope lasts 100 shots, that is more than most hunters will shoot in a decade or two. At the other end of the spectrum, I’ve shot upper hundreds to low thousands of deer and pigs with Nightforces in small, medium and large sizes. They work well for hunting for me.

I enjoy shooting and in years past shot a lot. So equipment differences began to reveal themselves when more rounds were fired and different gear was tried.

So sharing my observations and experiences so others can avoid my sometimes expensive lessons learned the hard way. I too appreciate reading and learning from other’s shared experiences.

The VX3 came on a .308 I bought used within the last five or so years. The target looked like it was hit with a shotgun. Swapped scopes and the rifle started shooting great without any other work. Sent the scope in for repair, then gifted it to a friend that was tight on money. He shoots less than five shots a year and it is working for him so far.

I hear you and concur on the cost of putting scopes on a bunch of rifles. I view NF NXS and NX8 as the beginning level of scopes I will trust to work when needed with good image quality.

Reliability is critical to me - above all other factors. All the rifles I think I am likely to shoot in the foreseeable future now have Pic rails. So moving scopes around is quick and easy.

I remember from prior discussions you mostly use S&B’s. They are superb without a doubt. I’ve not used a Kahles, but hear only good things about them. The single best scope I ever looked through is a Hensoldt military issue. The image was stunning and the turret adjustments felt like a precision instrument. The one for sale to civilians was over $12,000 so that did not end up in my safe. If you ever have a chance to handle one, do it. Truly on a whole different level.

Hensoldt makes great optics. I’ve got 1 older scope from them and as you say the glass and turrets are amazing. They’re very pricey though as you stated.

I like Nightforce, I’ve posted on here before that I’ve managed to “utilize” their warranty on an ATACR which is much more robust than the NXS and NX8 you like to start with. I’m surprised the older Mark IV went down but anything is possible just like an ATACR going down on a routine range trip. Shoot enough and you’ll eventually have a couple scopes go out.
 
We've got it better than we could ever have dreamed. I can't even remember when anyone disparaged a scope for fogging, and I mean at any price point. Broad band multi coatings are on what many call "cheap" scopes. Will they all track so that you can shoot a perfect square, no. But they will all mostly hunt and if we will admit it, hunt well.

Well said, and when I can pull a 50yo Leupold off a well hunted Super Grade pre64 .300H&H and send it to Leupold for inspection before shipping it to Australia and that scope comes back with a clean bill of health but Leupold went ahead and replaced the worn internals with new old stock and polished the lenses, sending it back in original but internally new condition.

That’s customer service when the invoice comes back with a balance of $0.00 and the satisfaction of keeping a gun period correct and in perfect working order.
 
The Cabela's in Hazelwood, MO has a left-handed Ruger 375 African for $1,200. With the included Leupold scope, it seemed like a good price especially since the availability of this particular model has started to dwindle a bit compared to a couple of years ago. I don't see them as often on GunBroker anymore.

Lon Paul Custom for sale

Folks,

As the title says I have a Lon Paul custom rifle for sale. As some of you may know Lon Paul is a well respected builder of high end safari rifles.

I wanted a rifle that I could use anywhere for about anything and that's exactly what I rec'd.

This rifle has been hunted and has taken buffalo, lion, hippo, croc and brown bear as well as a load of PG.

It shoots under an inch with softs and solids.

Specs:

Caliber: 375 WBY (it feeds and cycles 375 H&H smoothly) If your ammo does not arrive you should be able to find 375 H&H about anywhere.
Action: Model 70
Magazine: Drop box
Stock: Darce Echols synthetic 14" LOP with Decelrator pad and tapped for stud to allow tripod attachment
Barrel: 24" Douglas SS w/ barrel mounted sling swivel stud
Sights: Florescent bead with hood. Custom easily detachable peep to fit rear scope base
Trigger: Timney that breaks cleanly and consistently at 3LB
Finish: All metal has Ceracote
Weight: 9#

Rifle shoots 300 NF softs at 2760 fps and 270 TSX at 2900 fps so a step up from the 375 H&H.

I would rate the rifle as 98% with some minor scrapes on the stock and one very small spot were the Ceracote is gone.

I will include a quick detachable set of 1" Talley rings and a non detachable 1" set.

I don’t actually know that much about HH bolt guns what does the group think as good of a deal as it seems?

Beautiful rifle. The (perhaps only) good thing about the seller is they will ship it to any local store for you to evaluate. Just plan on spending around say $1500– $2000 to get rings fitted.

I do wish I’d been in the parking lot when they brought both of those in to sell. :-)
 
You bet, realistically speaking should you need a scope, therefore a rings to fit on the H&H side mount there are very few Gunsmiths in the US that can carve out one to match this sort of gunsmithing. Now add to the wait times, stuck with a scope of specific diameter, height etc.

H&H guns are generally custom ordered to someones fittings, probably this one is too, whether this one will fit you to a T is anyones guess.
Normally I dont or have ever bought a Rifle that I have personally not tried let alone a 20 K rifle. I'd rather drive to Dallas and pick one of these if I chose to. link
