In 1914 and early 1915, German snipers were engaging British Army positions with impunity from behind steel plates that were impervious to .303 British ball ammunition. In an attempt to counter this threat, the British War Office purchased 62 large-bore sporting rifles from British rifle makers, including 47 of .450 caliber rifles, which were issued to regiments, some British officers also supplied their own.

On one notable occasion, Richard "Dickie" Cooper brought down three Albatros D.III fighters from Ernst Udet's squadron, Jagdstaffel 15, with his Holland & Holland .450 Nitro Express big-game double rifle. Cooper is recorded as saying: "I aimed well ahead of the leader. He came down like a pheasant, as did the one that followed, and I had time to reload and fire again at the third before he passed over - he also crashed."

In reference to the thread on acceptable offhand accuracy, I came across this example with the 450NE referenced in an article by Douglas Tate, "Sporting guns that went to war", The Field Magazine, Vol 324 No 7321, August 2014, pp 100–103.

Unfortunately I don't have the article itself but have written to the author asking for it - The Field doesn't have a copy.

Do you think it went into his game book? Pheasant: 0, Partridge: 0, Hare: 0 Various: 3

"Yes Lads, There I was alone with only Sgt Duffy to back me up. Me, a young Leftanant assigned to the trenches near Ypres in France. The Jerries had started another offensive that morning and had shelled our lines for over an hour at sunrise. That was when I saw them, a gaggle of deadly Albatross bumbling directly at me in a multi-colors flying circus. They were armed with Maxim guns and me, only my trusty old Holland and Holland double rifle in 450NE. It had served me well in Africa to take Lion and Elephant and now, I was dueling with these butcher birds. I took careful aim at the leader, leading him just like a driven pheasant back at Grand-PaPa's estate in Cornwall. I squeezed the front trigger and the leader went down like the Titanic, his engine seized. With no time to admire my handiwork, I aimed at #2 and pulled the back trigger. With some surprise I saw smoke billow from the engine and #2 went down trailing a black sooty trail into the trees. Just like when culling Buffalo in Kenya, I reloaded two more rounds quickly and fired both barrels into the #3 Albatross and viola!, He rolled onto his back and dove straight away into the ground not 30 paces from where the Sgt and I stood. The #4 aircraft dove and strafed our position but flew away far to quickly for us to fire at him. Looking back on this episoide of the war now, I often wonder if had I saved a round for the #4, I might have killed Herman Goering long before 1940 and might have singlehandedly won the Battle of Britain... Hrrrrump!"

My old regiment’s game book (which had entries dating back to the Victorian era) had “Nazis: 2” recorded in the “various” column on the page for 1944.

The (potentially apocryphal) story goes that, while the regiment was advancing through Belgium, one officer took advantage of some down time to shoot hares in a crop field with the machine gun mounted to the top of his armoured vehicle. Allegedly, after he fired a burst in to some standing wheat, two rather sheepish Germans stood up and surrendered.

Other entries of note included a swan shot in Palestine in 1947 and a brace of sandgrouse taken on the Al Faw peninsular in Iraq in 2004.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
