So, I just got a Chapuis Elan in 450-400 3" NE and would like to work up a load using Barnes TSX 400 grain bullets. Load data is scarce to none. I have H4831 and H4831SC on hand and wonder if anyone else has already invented this particular wheel. Any help is much appreciated.

Would recommend considering Swift A-frames or Northfork bullets rather than Barnes in a Double.
I think top experts JJ or Ken will tell you Monolith bullets are hard on double rifles. I know you will see lots of posts here to the contrary but, take their advice and only use if other premium bullets won't regulate. JJ has more experience with Chapuis doubles than anyone in the US and I take his advice to heart. Copper fouling is an issue and at DR velocities they often don't have reliable expansion.
To those who love Barnes bullets, I apologies to you as most readers her know my feeling on them.
Owning several DR including Heyms and Chapuis I personally have seen and experienced Barnes bullet issues.

Whats the diameter of the bores on the Chapui's, 0.410" or 0.411"? I'm using 400 grain RNSN Woodleighs 0.411" with 87.5 grains of 2217, gives me 2090fps out of 24" barrels.

Take a look at Graeme Wrights book on shooting the double rifle that’s where I started in working up my loads. If you don’t have the book PM me and I’ll give you some info.
Just for context my Chapuis didn’t like Barnes bullets at all. It regulates great with A-Frames but couldn’t get anything even close to decent with Barnes.

You are correct especially in vintage DRs. In newer ones such as Chapuis they tend to have no trouble with BarnesWould recommend considering Swift A-frames or Northfork bullets rather than Barnes in a Double.

Making me rely on shooting TSXs in a fine DR would be the Ultimate Torture! Biting the head off a Herring.....I've done that so a trashing with one would be better.

Leave in 5 days for Tanzania for a DR only Buffalo and Hippo (out of water) with way more on License of each than it's possible to take in under 3 weeks.

Have a couple great Chapuis is same calibers that I've had forever but intend to have JJ add 16oz recoil reducer to the buttstocks to move the balance point back to center of the action for quicker swing and recovery. All 4 regulate with RL15 and 470's really like 3031 with 1" of foam spacer.

Wow, I'm touched by all the responses and the thought that went into them. I asked Maynard to pose with the new (to me) Chapuis. The rifle came with Picatinny mounts so I imagine the previous owner used a scope. It was regulated with DGX ammo which it likes. I have a couple of boxes of 400 grain TSX but I think I'll hold off reloading and experimenting until I can find A-frames which are scarce at the moment.
What a great picture! Bears do have trouble carrying a rifle "African Style", just not broad enough shoulders.

I've used Barnes in my Krieghoff with no issues along with CEB solids. I've also used Hornady and Woodleigh. Although the Woodleighs shot very well I was less than impressed with their performance on game that I shot with them.

Every rifle is different yours might love the Barnes. I’d load up a half dozen and see if there is any promise in them.
