Strangely, this thread started with a spicy Italian meal resulting in a dream....I had decided to sear a sleeping lion on the rump with a red hot cattle brand and then seek shelter in my Landrover (which I don't have...) Of course the door wouldn't open. It was all Technicolor real when my wife poked me for running in place under the covers. OK, I would never do that in waking hours!!

But it made me think of all the stupid, risky Bubba moments I have engaged in...high speed conveyances of two wheel and four wheel persuasion, etc. (I think I will list mine last.)

What is the zaniest stunt you've pulled in Africa or back with local home field advantage?

Youtubed a video on how a german isreali rocket worked and since no one was fluent in germsn we kinda made an executive decision what setting for rockets to use before a major fight because we had recieved a bunch literally the day before and no instructions on use. Rockets worked better than the day went. So that psrt at least worked out ok.

I once argued with my wife…..

Forcing my way into the homes of the ungodly with a prayer on my lips and an MP-5 in my hands.

In college, a few of my teammates and I jumped off of a lighthouse into Lake Erie. I don't remember if we checked the water depth before taking the leap. One realizes very quick just how unnatural it is to be freefalling for more than a few fractions of a second. Really stupid in hindsight.

In my younger, stupid days:

1. Swam with sharks
2. Swam with alligators and (American) crocodiles
3. Rock climbed without ropes
4. Got my first car up to 147 MPH on a 2 lane road
5. Went 50 miles offshore in an 18 foot boat with nothing but a compass (But, I did have a chart and knew how to plot a course)
6. Jumped off waterfalls
7. Rode with a friend, as he passed 3 cars, through "hood (bonnet)" tall grass off the edge of a highway.
8. Camped several nights in a tent in grizzly bear country.

Hopefully, I'm done with doing stupid things at this point.

I've never done anything in Africa that I consider risky.
(DG hunting notwithstanding)

Hmm. Let’s see

1. Jumped off a 50’ cliff into plunge pool without personally checking the depth in college.
2. Free climbed a 50’-60’ cliff because it sounded like a good idea.
3. Bailed out of truck bed at 25 mph into a foot of snow because I thought it would cushion the fall (it didn’t)
4.snowboarding off my parents garage roof when they weren’t home (hurts)
5. Paddled across a large bay in Alaska in the middle of the night in an inflatable raft to get back to the boat after shooting a large black bear (that water was cold and there was a lot of large marine mammals around)
6. Bought a motorcycle because I somehow convinced my wife I’d be safe on it.
7. Voluntarily left my cushy desk job to fight wildfire for a living (currently en route to a large fire) because I have an adrenaline problem I’m pretty sure.

Why am I still in one piece?

I had a Ducati 900ss that I got up to 140mph in 5th gear on Hwy 6 in College Station one night and decided to push it, so I put it in 6th and pinned the throttle.

I don’t know how fast I ended up going but the speedo topped out at 160mph QUICK and speed kept building until I had tunnel vision.

I look back at doing that in t-shirt and jeans as one of the dumbest things I ever did.

Jumped off the rocks and swam in the Mississippi in front at that park near Cafe DuMonde, at about 2am.
How were the beignets and coffee, afterwards?

On my very first day hunting in Africa, we were on Deka and just sorta riding along while I was in wide eyed amazement. The two track crossed into Hwange Park and then back into the hunting area and pretty soon we came around a bend to find a spectacular lion sleeping right in front of us. Roy Vincent turned the truck to the right so I could take a photo of the now awake lion that was 20 or so yards away. Roy didn’t count on me being so excited that I jumped out of the cruiser before he could react, camera in hand, to get a better picture. Roy also jumped out but with his 460 Weatherby in hand while screaming at me to GET BACK IN THE TRUCK!!! Fortunately, the lion wasn’t impressed and trotted off into the bush. I was jabbering like a magpie when I got back in the truck. Roy looked at me and said ‘That lion could have been on you in 2 seconds. Don’t ever do that again.’ So I/we didn’t.

But a few days later we were laying side by side on a very large termite mound while over a hundred buffalo were streaming by us, splitting up around the mound and passing on both sides. We literally had buffalo less than 10 yards away from us, on both sides of the mound for quite a while as they fed past us. It was exhilarating!

I had never owned a motorcycle until I was 50.

Now, I own 2.

I wrecked the dirt bike last September. I limped along for a few months, but I'm fine now.

If iPhones and YouTube were around when I was in high school and college, we would have been the inspiration for Jackass. I don’t know how we survived those years without serious injury. One of my friend’s older brothers broke both his legs surfing - on the hood of a car. He grew up to be a prominent corporate litigator. Another friend was busted for dancing naked in a sombrero in a Burger King parking lot. When he made bail, he was driven to the Governor’s Mansion (state purposefully omitted) and skinny dipped in the pool without incident. I always said he would grow up to be the president or assassinate the president and he split it down the middle and became a minister. We had a lot of fun.

I’ve use the strategy cut till the tree starts talking and run like hell more times than I care to remember. Sometimes you do what you have to do to keep the bills paid.

I get a kick out of predator calling black bears too which is essentially using yourself as bait.

I have done a lot of stuff that does speak well of my decision making abilities. But one that I look back on and wonder how it didn't maim us...

In my youth - say before the age of 10 - me and my buddies wanted to be mountain men, and had the requisite coon skin caps and Kentucky rifle cap guns - real wood and real metal. Perhaps some of you will remember those rifles: two small relief holes on the barrel near the hammer. You put a cork "ball" in the barrel and the hammer struck a red paper cap, which caused the ball to come out. Well, that wasn't good enough for us.

We taped the holes with electrical tape, opened up my dad's shotgun shells to get powder, and topped the powder off with marbles. I don't think we had all that much for velocity, but it caused the marbles to come out and hit the side of the garage.

I kid you not. How those didn't blow up on us I will never know. It was short-lived. We were afraid my dad would notice the shells missing, so it was a one day experiment. Looking back I realize it has something of a Patrick McManus-esque quality to it, but I am not fibbing: true story.

Please someone else tell me they also tried that too. We couldn't have been alone.

A Googled photo - not my gun

I did roughly half that speed, in a Camaro, on a country road as a teenager. I was destroyed by a judge. I also don’t have the best luck.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
