Zastava rifles in 458 wm

Did you forget the quotation marks on a 10-year-old quote from Phil Shoemaker or did you just make up the quote ?
Phil has been carrying that modified Whitworth .458 WIN MAG barreled action in a Brown Precision stock for over 40 years now.
I do not think he would spell it "Zastave."
He is smarter than that.

Old Ugly's barrel is 21", not 20-1/2".
Correction on camperx.
Anyone pretending to be Phil Shoemaker incognito would do well to go by a handle like "cobblerx" not camperx.
 
Reviving this thread. I’m looking at getting my first DG rifle soon. My local gun shop has the .375 H&H and .458 Win mags in stock.

Considering one of these, but I plan to polish the bolt rail and potentially glass bed. If I was to replace the stock, whPurpose would be DG hunts, a thick timber gun for elk (overand maybe a carry on hunts where grizzlies are a threat… and probably shooting some feral

Best zastavas are pre 1990.
And last couple of years i havent seen any brand new zastava in 375 or 458.

Having said that, pre 1990, or post 1990, you can fix all these bugs. And on the emd you will have the cheapest CRF DG rifle in the world, and good one.
Keep in mind they are not magnum lenght actions.

I have a Zastava in 9.3x62. For a 375 or especially a 458, first thing I'd do is replace the stock. Mine cracked just in front of the trigger guard, and that's just 9.3x62 recoil.

I ended up putting a Boyd's on it, had it bedded.

One other thing to look at is the scope mount holes. Mine are off center by a few thou, so I had to really crank the windage over to get sighted in. Also, in order to make a NECG aperture work, I had to drift the front sight over a bit because of the non-centered scope mount holes.

Are they just standard M98 stocks?
 
No, they have a custom stock for Zastava M70. Last I looked, they only had it in LH, which was great for me since I've a LH M70. You can always call, they do it all on CNC.

Also, if you go with Boyd's the template for the M70 is off the pillars by enough I wasn't willing to fool with it, so I just brought it to Gordy and Sons in downtown Houston.

Boyds make a RH stock for Zastava LKM70 it fits good but no cross bolts, but easy to fit 6 mm stainless threaded rod & drill outside holes with a 8 mm forester bit & fill holes with JB weld died black looks like factory if done with care.
 
My Charles Daly action I got back in the early 2000’s had scope base holes that were miss aligned so bad that I had to use Leupold windage adjustable rear base to correct it.

Other than that it was a hell for stout action that needed some smoothing and the safety upgraded.

Also, I did just have a BRNO .375 reworked by an excellent smith; it was an 80’s production gun and you could tell it was made on tired and worn tooling, so it took quite a bit of money to get it in shape.

Point being just make sure and look it over good and be prepared to put some money into it.
 
if I were lookgin at a 458 zastava, I would first make sure the magazine and receiver are sized properly for a 458 and not a 375. I have seen many 458s that had a huge mag box and receiver - was told they cut them all for 375s, not 100% sure that is true. I would prefer to have the proper size all around - and no i do not dio any of that long-loading stuff to accomodate the extra space
 
IDK, after reading about the critical issues (and not just in this thread) with Zastava DG rifles, I’d be seriously looking for a lightly-used but still mostly stock CZ 550 in .458 or .375 ….. in the classifieds here or over on [that other site], or failing that maybe one of the auction sites.

Pre-owned .458s for sale seem to run in waves on all these boards. Zastava shouldn’t be anyone’s only option.

I’m considering a modern Winchester 70 in .416 Rem Mag and a Sako in .375 as well. I would prefer a CRF though.
 
Very late to this party but with some basic tuning you can make a Zastava run as well as any other Mauser 98 project gun! The need a bit of love and polishing but they can get there! Here is a photo of one I’m working on now with the bolt polish in process, a new three position safety, the raceways and rear receiver bridge smoothed out with 600 grit paste and lots of cycling, and of course a fire blued ejector!

Don't know anything about that. With the bedding that Gordy's put in a laminate stock for a 9.3x62, I figure I'm good.
