I just bought a 1959 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 off a gun forum up here in the great white north. I've been pondering a new offering from Winchester in 30-06 for some time, (more specifically a new Super Grade in AAA French walnut) and then magically this one popped up on the sale forum. I didn't hesitate this time fellas. If it's not pissing rain this fall I'll take it out for moose and bear on day trips. :)

Thanks fellas, i’m really excited about this one. I would really like to refinish the stock and add a orange recoil pad. Like this one…

If you are going to refinish it and add a pad why are worried about taking it out in the rain?

Rust I guess and I hate rain

Haha, I get it. I have a 1957 m-70 300 H&H I took to the eastern Brooks Range to hunt Grizzly partly to stay out of the rain. Even then I carried it in a soft water proof gun case. Have to admit the gun with the pad looked good.

I have a 1960 300 HH. It is one of my very favorites even though I've not hunted with it. It is on the short list for plains game!

Put a couple of good coats of renaissance wax on the wood and metal, imo it will make a big difference, I love the stuff

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
