Greatest athlete of modern times

There’s a Japanese rugby league were guys play and still tackle that is full of 70-80 year olds.
@Killingtime - that must be exciting (compared to Soccer), 80 year olds “running” to the toilet and being just “seconds too late”, redefining the term “scrum” and where a Yellow Card means someone “pee’d themselves”

Bo Jackson.

First runner up:

Dallas Seavey and his Iditarod Trail winning teams. Six victories and a record shattering finishing time in ‘21 that will never be broken on the most dangerous 1100 mile race on earth.

I’m biased though. I trained his kennel with him in 2011-12.

"may be the greatest athlete of all time.........." a VERY honorable mention for Marvelous Marvin Hagler but I think I would have to place Jim Thorpe at #1. I have much more respect for endeavors that were achieved WITHOUT anabolic agents, peptides, hormones etc. Many modern "athletes" lean into them for their performance. Who knows what Thorpe or Hagler had access to but certainly not the plethora of performance enhancing products available today.

Maybe with Thorpe but anabolics haven’t changed much since the 80’s and honestly most of the main ones since the 60’s. If anything a lot of anabolics that were available then are faked today or use other compounds and claim them to be different. And most would be irrelevant to a boxer. Peptides and stem cells for healing Would be a game changer. Prohormones are garbage precursors to actual anabolics so not as good, hgh for healing but doubt most athletes are using it in there sports.

The major difference today would be knowledge of peds and healing peptides. And people forget we had cyclists in the 1800’s using cocaine to compete, people in Ancient Greece and Rome eating herbs and animal testicles hoping to get an increase in performance. If people in the bc era knew that testosterone was a game changer and the nazis were using synthetic testosterone then you honestly don’t know what athlete was on or off. We had a doctor using testosterone on patients in the 1940’s in the us military to help them heal and John Ziegler invented dbol in the 50’s and happened to be the doctor to the us olympic weightlifting team in the 60’s when we were actually winning that sport…(I wonder if they were on lol), the nfl had them using peds in the 60’s look up the chargers back then. so any athlete is suspect I guess over the last 90 years. I don’t think it matters one way or another no one wants to see an average human you want greatness.

There was a 86 year old Doctor playing with them about a decade ago think he said he had broken multiple ribs and collarbone yet still kept playing. They have 80-90 yr old soccer leagues. It’s a mind set some 50 years I meet do nothing at all yet we have guys on here hunting the world at 85+

@Killingtime - didn’t see one 80 or even 70 yr old “running” and audio mention the older ones play “touch”———still nice to see older men doing any Sport but hardly real “Rugby”

@Killingtime - 86 yr olds Break ribs “coughing” or sitting on the toilet. But, just “moving” helps people at any age and the more the better

And yeah they may play touch at that age. I notice that. But I see a lot of them in. The 60’s tackling

Every sport has its challenges. If it’s purely physical then football trumps most but rugby is way more physical. The average pro rugby player gets 10-11 tackles a game and the team 160+ a game. NFL lineman/linebackers get half that and the team 1/3. And I believe mma or Muay Thai trumps all of them

Here’s the 70-80+
@Killingtime - that was one Funny video and liked the guy with his shorts Up-to-his-armpits….he had to be over 80 just to be able to wear his shorts that HIGH. I didn’t see any real tackles but did see old guys pushing & Falling down so giving You the benefit of doubt…AND they actually Got back UP (without Medical assistance) so they are TOUGH OLD GFUYS for SURE

Football hits are literally 3x harder than the hardest rugby hits. Even professional rugby players cringe at football hits.

I’m not sure how you actually measure that but the game keeps going in rugby and I’ve seen some insane hits. I get you can hit harder if you have a helmet and pads but I’m not sure other then Watching a highlight real of the hardest hits how you compare that to an actual game. I’ve sat field side for multiple seasons of nfl and college games and you may see one crazy hit every couple games on average. That being said I enjoy football more because I grew up with it. But physical is not a hit here or there it’s the whole game. And rugby is superior in every aspect. Heck probably 90% of db’s and wr’s don’t have the aerobic capacity to last a whole soccer game let alone the linemen. But most pro rugby players could.

Buck shelford lost three teeth getting kicked in the head and got knocked out at the beginning of a match. Came to kept playing then later in the game got kicked and had his scrotum literally rip open.. he played the rest of the match his testicle was actually hanging out at the end when he went to the locker room and got 16 stitches. Idiotic sure but name any player in football doing that. That’s something I expect from only hockey players

Hits by NFL players often exceed 60 Gs. Rugby hits rarely exceed 20 Gs.

As far as scrotums go, the Seattle Mariners baseball team has had more instances of ruptured testicals than they have playoff appearances.

What about Geo. Washington, throwing a silver dollar across the Potomac!

Of course, a dollar went a lot further in those days, pay-tump-pah.

But they didn’t keep playing the game. His sack was ripped open with it hanging out and he finished the game. Also I’m trying to understand were you equate a harder hit with a helmet and pads to a more physically demanding game.. there is a reason they went to those pads. It was to protect the player. Because less equipment means more physical punishment on the body not less.

Your first sentence needs its own thread, “craziest athletes”. I saw a man cut his own testicle out and he threw it at me, missed and hit someone else with it. He wasn’t athletic, just crazy.

I see football as being more demanding because every play is at full speed, which is why there are pads and helmets.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.
