12 Year Old boy killed by a Croc in India

You did,ask the question of "Who cares!" I gave you an answer. Many do care.

I do, however, share your concern about over population and the limited resources of the planet. I'm just not willing to feed live children to crocodiles, or tigers for that matter.
No one said feed anyone to anything. Kid made bad choice.. darwin winbout

You have no idea how things actually work in remote, rural parts of India. It is not the life of luxury that many people are accustomed to.
Consider a typical day: a poor boy and his uncle spend from sunrise to sunset toiling hard in muddy paddy fields. After a grueling day of labor, they go down to the riverbank to wash off the dirt. This is not a leisure activity; it is a normal, daily ritual in these parts of India due to the lack of running water.
That is exactly when the crocodile struck.
This is the tragic, everyday reality that millions face when human survival directly overlaps with predator territory.

I am not pretending to be an authority on the daily life on an indian laboror. nor does it matter.

no more tragic than someone getting killed driving home. its not a leisure activity its a normal daily ritual. after a hard days work in a more developed nation

death is our constant companion

30-40 deaths per year from crocs in india.. out of 1.47 billion people

0.0027210884353741495 tradgedies per 100k people

usa 342 million
43000 car deaths a year

12.573099415204679 tradgedies per 100k people

your making a straw man argument. just because their lifestyle is alot different than a more developed nation does not negate tragedy is tragedy. NOR does it change the severity of tradgedy.

once again none of yall care that 43k people died in america in a year from car crashes alone. or that a woman was killed by an alligator in florida swimming.

what makes this death any more special than any other death? or any less painful to the families involved..

i would argue its actually less painful in 3rd world nations as they are alot less emotionaly fragile than most people in the west

Ah yes, nothing says "emotional resilience" like growing up with fewer resources and more hardship. Weird how people keep confusing surviving difficult circumstances with not experiencing pain.
You should let every psychologist and psychiatrist know they've wasted decades studying something you solved in one sentence.

i never said they dont experience pain. you seem to be intentionally conflating what/creating things not being being said to fit your pre set narrative.

less does not =0 but that their perspective and social views change how the blow lands.

vs the west where people are activley programmed to be overly sensitive to everything

While I don't disagree that your comment about the number of people getting killed by trains may be a bigger issue for India, I'm personally appalled that you would feel the need to publicly comment on here about "who cares" to the loss of life of a 12 year old to a man eating croc, would it have made a difference if this happened in Africa? If all you care to say is something this negative I wish you would just keep it to yourself versus polluting our great forum with such trash comments
I mean what’s worse, the one who says “who cares?” Or the people who click the link wanting to watch it happen? (Not having a dig at anyone, my younger self would click the link).

I agree..
but thats a bumper sticker answer and not what gives life value value cannot be an abstract. meaning and purpose are not value.
Kinda bumper sticker ish, I agree. But it's just the most simple way that my small, smooth brain can put it. I'm not a philosophy major and won't pretend to be, but I certainly value life much more knowing He is with me. Have a great day everybody!!!

But "value" is entirely abstract and subjective. You may value gold highly, but if you're drowning, do you want me to throw you a valuable gold brick or a few pennies worth of foam?

Wait a sec, do I value your life enough to even make that effort? Could you tread water while I do a cost/benefit analysis? I mean, it's my time and energy throwing either object at you. Are you going to pay me back? My services are expensive given the critical nature of what's provided.

If you were standing at that riverbank, rifle in hand, and had the opportunity to shoot that croc to save that boy's life, would you do it?

The death of any human makes the world poorer for one human being.
When something like that happens to a part of me, something dies because I am also a part of humanity.
Of course, it is terrible when a boy who has just started to live loses his life in such a way. Needless to say, it really doesn't matter who he is or where he's from.

Im capable of a spirited debate and keeping it cordial.

Still funny no ones answered what gives life its value?

But also whats wrong with liking one culture and not others?? Or even none at all?
Dear friend John, the value of every life is relative. It depends on whether that value is judged by the one who speaks or the one who listens. I'll be the one talking now.
The value of life is when you can walk proudly and no one can disturb your walk. That you know what you want in life, and more than that you know what you don't want.
To be ready to give up material values to help someone you have never met in your life. And be happy because of that.
The value of life is also that you can listen to another person and learn from him, and one day you will be jealous that he knew more than you.
The value of life is also the friends you make. The trust they show you.
The value of life is also the education you have. When you wake up in the morning and get up smiling, that's the value of life.
When you meet friends on a forum that was founded 15,000 km away from you, it must be the value of life.
This morning, when I was going to work, I came across two creepers that were in the middle of the road. 1000% someone would run them over with a car. I stopped and put them in the grass. A man saw me do that and laughed at me. I laughed at him too. It made me happy, so that's a value for me.
The value of my life is also the fact that if I am walking alone on the street and someone behind me calls thieves, I will not have the urge to turn around.
The value of life is when you are not enslaved by vices, that you can play with them but not let them conquer you. The value of life is that you managed to find someone with whom you can sit and listen for days without getting bored.
The value of life is also the peace of the one who lives it, that a person knows how to face challenges. I wholeheartedly agree with the writer Rudyard Kipling and his poem "if"

Idk he might have a point. I do know I ask my dad and his siblings why they usto be such a high number of children born to the farm families around here.
There answer of free labor did not surprise me.
But the family expected to lose 2-3 either by sickness or farm accident did suprise me.
The oldest one of his siblings I believe was born in 1920.

And that my grand father buch there was 9.
4 did not make it to 15

Not to side track this post.
But on another fourm a 12 yo .
That came to fl on vacation lost his hand to a gator.
He was fishing and released a fish and a gator grabed his hand .
The dad jumped on the gator but it still took the hand.
I don’t know much more about it than that

Oh and for the talk of value of life.
I am kinda a hard nose as$hole about it.
Mostly from seeing some of the worst in humanity.
But I do not hold that with children.

Terrible tragedy... video is not for the faint of heart...

It is so amazing, when I hunted with D&Y they said on average 2 villagers get killed by crocs or hypos each week throughout all the villages represented in their hunting areas. They told me although they have tried multiple times over the years to warn the villagers the answer is always "God wills." The paths they walk down to the lake are dug deeply and of course the crocs just lie in wait, but the villagers will not change their paths.

being willing to die for others is noble. but does not answer what is the value of life.

and yes things do move in society using blood as a currency but also everyone has a choice. like you did was not worth it to you. it is to some.

the more or less casualties argument can be made but there will always be losses

sure. and Kant is a good read bit dry. but im not asking for kants opinion

appeal to emotion is not a value. yes loss of life is tragic for those involved but still irrelevant.

The issue is the world is a closed system (IE we have only whats here no reasources from off world)
as such there is a finite carrying capacity the world has for all the biodiversity on it we so love. WE as humans are beyond that.

finite resources and space. +ever growing population = less space and resources for not just us but for all the flora and fauna.

Our kids will compete for jobs mates places to live ect with all 9 billion people on the planet.
costs will go up
epidemics more common
wars over resources to benifit one in group at the expense of another more frequent.

Life does have value but not all life has the same value. How one serves ones people and nation is in my opinion the value added factor. I can respect other peoples and cultures without supporting it.

in the grand scheme of life one death while locally tragic is not that big a deal.

and by default the desire to see the kid live to be 100 your also wishing your kids/grandkids more competition for all the above.
What is the value of life is as subjective and idiotically open ended to your ability to deny any that doesn’t placate your thoughts and that question is as smart as asking how many bubbles are in a bar of soap?

You want to lower the impoverished world population? Simply mandate organic farming and ban the Haber-Bosch system, you’d have that competition your worried about cut by billions in a couple of months.

If you’re willing to throw a drowning man an anchor to prevent competition to “your children” that’s your decision to make and we’ll see the world end up in your making.

I will say though, your exact remarks that boil down to…
“me, mine, me” is what separates the elderly people I knew as a kid from the elderly people of today; the Greatest generation genuinely cared about the nation they left behind for all younger than themselves; the elderly people today seem to have your mind set and only think as far as their grandchildren’s lives directly.

Example: Ross Perot in 1992 said “NAFTA is mortgaging your grand children’s futures and if passed you will hear a giant sucking sound of American jobs leaving this county.”

As if from a prophet, but no a 5’5” man with big ear from Fort Worth Texas told everyone of voting age exactly what would happen……

Because he cared about not only lives but quality of life for others.

By the time we got to Omay in 2024 I think they had 11 people taken by crocs in that area so far that year, it was July 1st!

I dont hold it for or against anyone. Its like a credit score some people have bad credit. Some people good credit.

Most Kids just have no credit as they have not really done anything one way or the other.

But at the same time. While a tradgedy were talking about a people and culture whos views and values are comoletely alien to our own. A d were trying to project western values onto them. It doesnt work.

Just rapes rampant permisibility in india and the middle east is wild. And thats why you see it happe ing to british girls

2 different societies
2 divergent views and values.

I dont hold kids to blame but like the previous poster he coukd have grown up to save the world. Statistsclly hes more likely to grow up to be a rapist.

And most these places do not place much value on life..

And we have enough problems in US and EU
The overwhelming numbers of people outside that. Are not even a factor in the equation until we shore up and fix our own house.

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
Thank you,
Bob
