Meopta Meostar R2 Line

I'd been having trouble finding optics from this line and was recently informed that it was discontinued a few years ago. I know they recently released a new Meopro line, but those appear to be replacing the Optika 6 line. Does anyone know if they plan to release a new premium line?

I have two Meopta scopes (both R2's) but since I have everything I need, I haven't been paying much attention to the optics world lately. Doing a quick Google search I found that Meopta closed their USA headquarters in 2024. I didn't see another post saying they had opened a new one. Around late 2024, their USA Facebook page stopped posting new content. Their online USA web store that used to list all of the available models (which I ordered one of my scopes from) now shows a blank page with an uninformative message. Camera Land NY has 122 pages of scopes listed on their website. The number of Meopta's is zero and searching for the brand has most related accessories as blank too. This does not look promising.



The one thing that I did see in Meopta news is that they appear to have been getting a lot of military contracts lately. I bet that's a lucrative & reliable income stream. But I don't know if that's actually shifted their focus away from sports optics or not.

I have no inside information or rumours to share. But I did notice two things:

• The main Meopta website now only mention two business areas: "Industrial & OEM" and "Military Applications" https://www.meopta.com/en/
• The https://www.meoptasportsoptics.eu/index.html website has been reduced to a repository of pdf product catalogues. The only riflescopes mentioned in the 2026 catalogue are the MeoHunter and MeoPro productlines.

I own a Meopta R1 riflescope. Maybe I should put it up for sale with the slogan: "they don't make them like this anymore!"

Meopta will probably come back in the future.

After they were acquired by Carlyle in 2023, as with any organization that is acquired by an investment company, I expected changes. Investment companies want value and return on investment. The focus on military contracts makes sense. More profit than focusing on civilian items at this time. If I remember correctly, they were acquired because of the military business line, not the consumer/civilian business line.

Also note that many of their entry to midlevel consumer scope lines are now made in PRC, not Europe.

I have an older Meopta scope, but without enough coffee this morning I'm not remembering which scope, that I think is really good.

I've read this line is assembled in the USA of Czech components to avoid tariffs. Although other research points to that the R5 and R6 based lines are out of China, at least before the tariff focus over the last couple of years. So not positive anymore.

When you say R5 and R6 do you mean Optika5 and Optika6? Those were recently replaced by the Meopro line. The Optika6's I have a comparable to Leupold HD5/HD6's in my opinion.

The MeoPro R6 & MeoPro R5 lines are the current successors to the older Optika lines:

Got it, we are on the same page now. They make a 2-10x42mm in this line which I think is an incredible bang for the buck. If I was building a basic deer rifle for a new hunter it would be topped with one of these.

The 2-10x42 was always more affordable than the top-of-the-line 1.7-10x42 R2. Getting that extra 0.3x of zoom range at the low end was expensive! I always thought the 2-10x42 would be a solid choice for an all-around scope. For the woods I hunt in, I like my zooms to start off at a low magnification. I really like the MeoStar R2 1-6x24 RD on my Ruger No. 1 in 303 British.

Optika5 2-10x42 is really nice scope, just get the one with normal plex-reticle. Other option with lots of holdover dots is quite fine and difficult to see with no illumination. I have used both.

R2 1.7-10 is super good scope also, many times compared to be close in performance to similar Swarovski Z6. I love mine, only small issue is that center dot on 4K could be bit smaller but they have different reticle options. Not sure if R2 series is still in production or not.

Meopta scopes are quite popular and considered solid in Europe, at least in Finland. Optika5/6 are made in China though as far as I know. R2 is for sure made in Czech.

I also think the 2-10x42 is about the perfect hunting scope. I might use the higher magnification for sighing in, but don't remember using higher than 6x when hunting.

Far as I know the war in Ukraine is putting a damper on Meopta, I honestly don't know much other than that..
We do have a bunch of stuff in stock however and its all marked at a pretty good price

In my opinion that magnification range is the most versatile of any scope you can buy.
