African Huntin Boots

I bought a pair of Jim Greeen 8 inch boots and used them in Zim in July loved them. Recently bought off of ebay a pair of Jim Green Razorbacks with the ranger sole. I really like them and they will be my backup for my hunt in Bots in a few weeks. Still like the 8 inch boots better

I have 3 pairs of Jim Green African Ranger boots and although I really like Courtney boots, I find the JGs far more comfortable, lighter, and quieter. I do wear a good arch supporting insoles in all my shoes and this is a MUST for me.
Nothing matches the durability and toughness of the Courtney tire tread but they are also heavy.
I guess everything is a trade off. Lighter, quieter, and more comfortable boot like the AR - BUT - less durable and impenetrable sole like the Courtney.
I have worn one pair of African Rangers 3-4 days a week for nearly 2 years and give zero complaints. About 6 months ago I bought a pair for nicer occasions. 3 weeks ago I bought a pair of the A Ranger “barefoot” boots and they are my absolute favorites; immediately comfortable and felt broken in like old shoes.
After 2 yrs wearing the JG ARs, I RARELY put on my other boots and don’t see that changing unless JG does something stupid like discontinuing them :)

I have boots made by Danner, Courtney and Under Armor.
The Courtney boots are built stout. I find them to be comfortable to wear, I did put a pair of orthotics in them. As others have stated they are heavy. These are my go to boots if I am not in wet conditions.

I also wear good wool socks. My go to brand right now is Darn Tough. They have a kick ass warrenty. Way better sock than smart wool.

My three pair of Danner’s are all water proof. They each have a specific type of use, cold weather hunting, upland hunting and a combat style boot.

The Under Armor boots with a leather upper are very light weight and comfortable. These boots also stop thorns in the bush.

I tried on 3 different pair of Jim Green boots. They all had roll the lenght of the sole that I found to be very uncomfortable.

I don’t believe in buying uncomfortable shoes and hoping they will break in.

Bandera ,I totally agree . I am 68 and don’t wear anything I need to break in. If it is not great out of the box it goes back. I like Danner boots a lot . I also like Kenetrek Corrie 2 Light hiker for a mountain hunt here in Montana. I think I am going to order Lems leather boulder boot. Nothing to lose with free returns.

Any 4” or 6” hiking boot from your Keene, Merrel, or others are good. A soft sole is better than a hard Vibram!

Just gave up on a pair of boots trying to brake them in.
Was talking to @PaulB about what boots he had in Bots just now on his last Safari. So I brought a pair of Lems Boulder Summit Boot.
I’ve been looking for some time and these have been on the top of the list. I liked the look of them but never really trusted the reviews. Paul said he got on well with his so went ahead. (Yeah I know internet review:Banghead:)
Was trying them out for the first time today.
Pros. They come in half sizes which is great if your between like me so the 8.5 is brilliant.
Fit well.
Good ankle support
Good lace length (pet pev you buy boots pay a good price and they skimp on lace length where you can’t double tie your bow)
Good grip
Quite no clunky stepping noise.
Wide toe space no pinching around the toes.
Light. Definitely not like lugging around my pair of Crispi
Also feet felt cool after 5km and it’s hot here today.
Let you guys know how they hold up as I go along.

My Lems have been on a PH trip, elephant trip, leopard trip, and recently California hogs. Have held up very well. Comfortable since day 1. Soles are a bit soft so the occasional thorn can sneak through and cause a hotspot, but haven’t had anything overtly painful or requiring me to stop immediately. It just kind of feels like a stone is in there

I’ll get you some punjab spikes to really test em out on.

Lowa Renegades
Had them for 6 years, fit like slippers

What's the best African Style boot you can buy, as well as gaiters? You know like you always see the PHs wear in shorts. I know I don't need a pair I'd just like to have them for my 1st safari.
You see Courtney’s a lot. I find that putting a pair of arch supports in Courtney’s is about perfect for my foot

Likewise. I got some when they first came out for archery hunting and they were great, but the injection blown rubber sole is very soft and you'll feel everything. It isn't hard for anything to make it through the soles.

They have some newer ones with a traditional rubber outsole, but they're all waterproof so you'll be giving up some breathability.

I have some Jack Pyke Tundra boots, on my second pair. 5 Africa trips and I find them very comfortable. this year I bow hunted, walk and stalk covered miles over very tough ground. They are not waterproof but at the time of year you will be there that wont be a problem the soles are very grippy on rocks and boulders.

Loving the new boots. Really grippy on loose down hill gravel. Light and quiet. Easy to break in. In fact didn’t need any.

This might require an inquiry by phone before ordering-

Fighting with this decision here myself as I need to commit to something if I’m going to wear them in to the extent I like to (minimum 30 miles). Was looking at the Merrel or Zamberlan Trail Lites as an option, as I have an existing pair of tall zamberlans that fit me well (long foot) I use for elk/out west mostly. Anyone tried them over there? Unfortunately foot doesn’t work with a Lowa. Given a history of ankle issues I need something I can trust on the support.

I have some zamberlan Salathe trek that worked well. It’s a flexible boot. I’ve since switched to JG but take a look at them.

I bought Courteney Safari Boots before my first African hunt and have never regretted it.

Don’t overlook the keen targee IV. They are really solid all around boots. I’ve spent years obsessing about this, you will never stop if you are like me
