Transitioning To A Blaser R8 - A Two Months / 500 Rounds Review

I still have 3, love them. I don’t really care controlled round feed or not. I care about accuracy. Blasters are seriously accurate and easy to use.

My own .375 H&H is a semi-weight barrel (19 mm, 25.6", iron sights, 1,708 gram / 3 lb. 12.2 oz.) so my .375 H&H weighs the same as my .458 Lott (thinner but longer barrel), which does not bother me, and is a delight to shoot, but a standard barreled .375 H&H on a steel receiver stock would weight 10 lb. 12 oz. Same for a .300 Win with standard barrel.

I too trust in the .458 Lott, .375 H&H and .300 mag battery, although my .300 is a Wby (y)

My fourth hunting barrel is .257 Wby. A true gem of a caliber :love:

My two training barrels are .22 LR and .223 Rem.

My wife shoots .270 Win, 9.3x62 and .222 Rem.

That looks like the perfect set up. I'd probably spring for one of the wood stocks though
 
Yep, I too had my linseed hand-finished Bastogne walnut period :love:

10 non-stop rain days in a Newfoundland moose fly camp turned a multi thousand dollars Griffin & Howe hand crafted and hand finished custom stock into a grey warped plank :eek:

Another time, during a cold Pennsylvania deer hunt, the stock of my Sauer 90 snapped at the wrist :oops:

I am done with fine walnut on hunting guns :ROFLMAO:

I wish Blaser made a laminate stock. I feel like that is the best of both worlds

There are aftermarket companies that do this. GRS is one of the most popular and @EuroOptic carries them in stock. They may require bedding the action, but they are available with a variety of options including thumbhole, 17/19/22 mm barrel channel and adjustable comb and LOP.

If only Blaser would sell me the guts from a professional stock receiver needed to make those stocks work.. would be a very cost effective and functional way to get into an R8

My first is due later this year, so I can't buy another gun in 2026, but you guys have convinced me to check one out in 2027. The photo of the .500 Jeffery (@Kevin Peacocke) was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Those don’t come with the action. You have to “steal” the action from a professional stock to put in them.
 
UPS has just delivered my Akila receiver to fit into the very cheap Professional stock I bought last week.

Alex does a great work and his adjustable trigger is much better for my liking than the classic factory trigger. I have chosen the single stage trigger, but he also offers a double stage trigger.

I'm a huge fan of the ATZL trigger on the R8 but I honestly think the Akila is even better now and cheaper.

Thanks to the system, we can select the trigger pull from 200 g up to 800 g with a little wrench while with the ATZL, you only have two choices, that is already great. In theory, it's 250 and 650 g but one of mines is lighter.

The other advantage of the Akila over the ATZL is you don't lose any space in the magazine with long cartridges like the .338 Lapua magnum or the .458 Lott.

I have ordered a smaller red rubber for the front of the magazine because with the black one from the factory, my .338 LM can't feed CIP length ammos (93.5 mm or 3.68") with this ATZL System. Same thing with the .458 Lott, and ammos at 91.44 mm or 3.60", when I fitted the barrel onto My stocks with the ATZL system.

I will also replace the classic trigger one the .458 Lott by the Akila as well, but just the trigger set. Of course, I keep the steel receiver.
