Another Woodworking Project….A Gun Rack

I’ve wanted a nice, portable gun rack since I first laid eyes on one. Alas, they ain’t cheap! So I built my own. It’s Zebra Wood. I have some leather on order to pad the barrel rest and replace the blue ratchet strap. I really like the figure in the wood, although Zebra Wood is a bit heavy and hard to mill.

Actually there are several different varieties of "zebrawood." I built my 404 during COVID when not much was available for exotic wood locally so I opted for a zebrawood fore end tip on the first stock. I found it very easy wood to work with and less dense than expected. Then I picked up a fancy finished and checkered stock second hand with ebony tip. Still have a small block of zebrawood left over. Not sure what I'll do with it.

Nice job on that gun rack. Quite stout and I'm sure it's heavy but I think that's a good thing. Most of the fancy commercial ones are so lightweight I think they might blow away in a stiff breeze.

@Doug3006 - Very well done. I do some woodworking and that is top notch work.

That would be a wonderful piece to have as a safari operator. When taking a break in the shade, get it off the bakkie and set it up to keep the rifles handy if an opportunity comes along.

The utility box on the backside is a great addition. Perfect for binos and a cartridge belt.

Could also see use while upland hunting with shotguns.
 
That is beautiful wood and even better craftsmanship. What a wonderful piece of functional art. Thanks for sharing.

This one is portable.
Made from zebra wood.
Strong and sturdy enough for the heaviest of big bore dangerous game rifles.
Has a tray for extra ammo and shooting accessories.
.It can be used at the rifle range and the trap and/or skeet ranges.
Can even add that extra bit of glamour to your backyard range when guest shooters arrive for one's big bore shoot.
Easily displays one's rifles and/or shotguns and adorns the trophy room, nestled under one's favorite trophies until needed at the range.

The slots are 2 inches wide, which is wide enough for my 20 gauge side-by-side. Maybe someday if I get a side-by-side rifle, it’ll fit, or I’ll modify the rack.

Hey Lance! I retired 18 months ago and have taken up woodworking as a hobby. I’m working through my list of pet projects….stuff I’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. I’ll tell you that buying one from Rigby or African Sporting Creations would be cheaper and of higher quality than one I could make. There’s $500 - $600 in materials in mine and about 2 solid weeks of labor. The labor hours are high because I’m an amateur with high standards. :DLots of rework and waste as a result. So, buying one for $1,500 would be a cheaper alternative to me making one.
 
NICELY DONE!!

I have done several projects with Zebra wood in solid and as veneer's. It is an interesting wood to work with. be careful if you start working with 1/2 or thinner pieces as they have a bad tendency to warp or twist on you.
