What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

Whilst I can’t imagine I was of any real help to the skinners I was honoured to be able to assist with the skinning of my cape buffalo. It was all part of the experience for me!

My ph even said he gets a lot of joy from clients who get stuck in with helping to carry their game out of the bush or helping with skinning/butchering or cooking their animal.

While there is definitely something to be said for letting the professional skinners do their job and not getting in the way, as it’s your safari that you are paying a lot of money for if you want to get involved and it’s safe and your ph is happy for you to do so then go for it!

My outfitter won't let the clients get involved. The trackers/skinners are very proud of their status. Don't infringe on that. I was told they take offense. There's also liability to be concerned with. Both are good reasons and I'm happy to comply. If I was an outfitter I'm not sure I'd be content to let someone I didn't know start slinging a sharp knife if it can be avoided. The tipping would probably be slim if the client spent the safari unable to hunt because he was nursing a slashed finger/hand/leg.

I have carried a knife since I was 6-7 years old. I carry a pocket knife daily and always carry one on safari in pants pocket. This next trip I will be carrying a special belt knife a friend has made me to cut off the Elephant and Hippo tails with.

I wouldn’t go near my hard-fought trophy with a knife!; not even at the point of a R8 chambered in the cartridge .500 Jeffery!!

For the ones who carry a knife, multi-tool and or ext....Are these carried on a separate safari (similar to a cowboy gun belt) belt or carried on your pants belt.

Pocket knife: clipped on and inside pants pocket.

Multi tool: either in a separate pant pocket or in pack, sometimes in a leather case on my pant belt.

Fixed blade: length and carry location depends on situation. On pant belt, in pack, on handgun belt.

Dedicated skinning knives, actually my own preferred items skinning/drag kit, are in backpack or vehicle, depending on situation.

Hand brush/limb trimmer: in pack, or in a holster on pant belt or gun belt depending on situation.

In Africa: pocket knife clipped on and inside pant pocket, multi tool in case on pant belt or with fixed blade knife. Fixed blade on ammo belt or in pack in truck.

One on my pants belt and one in my pocket.
@LeftySixgun - carrying TWO Knives = PREPARED…maybe it’s a “Lefty” thing but when Hunting Big Game (or Camping) I’m also carrying Two. Have carried a pocket knife since 3rd Grade - it’s a hard habit to break. I find a reason to use a pocket knife almost everyday and those that know Me are often asking “hey, can You ‘CUT THIS?”

Don’t get me wrong. I Carr y a folding pocket knife daily also. I was just simply asking do yall carry the fixed blade on your pants belt or on another separate belt like your culling belt or whatever you wear. I’m on the fence about carrying my fixed blade on me when I hunt Africa next year.

Personal preference.

I carry a fixed blade out of habit; and feel a bit underdressed without one, while out hunting.

Don't bother. The trackers take pride in their position of some status within the safari profession. As you will see, safari hunting is a lot about role playing. Yours is typically not to be gutting or skinning animals.

Hunting big game in North America is usually solo, for me anyway. Sheath knife is in my daypack (why have it on my belt where it can rub against my rifle stock?). I have a mini multi-tool that I carry in the zipped breast pocket of my upland vest (that I usually also wear big game hunting). Mostly along in case I need to pull thorns or quills from the dogs. Usually forget I even have it.

@LeftySixgun - If I was only carrying One then it would be a Fixed Blade 4 1/2”- 5” in a sheath on my regular belt (that holds up my pants)… Fixed blades a stronger and many are light. I usually always have a pocket knife regardless - 2 1/2’- 3” blade.

@Rare Breed - I agree and respect “Traditions”
Hahaha, I like traditions and traditional….one reason why I’m carrying a 7x57 with 175gr RN for my first African safari.
But this is a knife thread.
I don’t normally carry a fixed blade on me when I hunt because it normally cold, wearing extra layers, and sitting in a tree. It’s in my hunt pack though. I’ll likely carr6 on my belt when I go to Africa.

One looks and feels so cool with a fancy knife strapped on his belt.

@Happy Myles - a knife can never make someone cool but it does seem to make many envious & jealous….agree many should never wear one

I didn’t read but a few of the first page and a few on the last page so forgive me if I’m repeating some of the 26 pages in between. If you’re a man and you have pants on, you should have a knife. End of story and I include shorts in the pants comment. You never know when you’re going to need a knife and you should not have to go looking for it. Just because you have one, doesn’t mean you have to attempt to help. It just means you’re prepared if you need it.
