AH legend
Hello everyone,
I am currently reading—once again—the magnificent book by Frank Dufresne, *No Room for Bears*.
It is a work I read with great enthusiasm back in my youth.
In it, the author described just how endangered brown bears and grizzlies were, due to insufficient conservation measures and the powerful logging industry destroying their coastal habitat.
This was particularly true on the ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof).
The book was written a good 60 years ago.
My questions for you are:
Are there still abundant populations of brown bears in that area?
Is hunting them still permitted?
If so, how many are harvested there each year?
Is the region—specifically these islands—worth visiting as a regular tourist?
Back in my youth, one said ,the rule was that in Alaska, a hunter was allowed to harvest a brown bear or grizzly ,only once every seven years; there was even talk of potentially reducing that limit to just one bear per hunter's entire lifetime.
Surely, the situation must have—fortunately—shifted completely in favor of the bears by now.
Our AH member @Tundra Tiger wrote to me that, once reaches the age of 65 (the hunter, not the bear
), in certain regions one is actually permitted to shoot two brown bears !!!, and no state-imposed fees are charged.
This suggests a tremendous growth in the bear population, and it strikes me as a truly commendable social initiative by your government to make hunting so affordable for locals—and especially for retirees.
Meanwhile, non-residents—faced with your hunting fees—are liable to suffer a stroke or heart attack just reading about it!
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Greetings from Tyrol—the other side of the world!
