Hello everyone,
I am currently reading—once again—the magnificent book by Frank Dufresne, *No Room for Bears*.
It is a work I read with great enthusiasm back in my youth.
In it, the author described just how endangered brown bears and grizzlies were, due to insufficient conservation measures and the powerful logging industry destroying their coastal habitat.
This was particularly true on the ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof).
The book was written a good 60 years ago.
My questions for you are:

Are there still abundant populations of brown bears in that area?

Is hunting them still permitted?

If so, how many are harvested there each year?

Is the region—specifically these islands—worth visiting as a regular tourist?

Back in my youth, one said ,the rule was that in Alaska, a hunter was allowed to harvest a brown bear or grizzly ,only once every seven years; there was even talk of potentially reducing that limit to just one bear per hunter's entire lifetime.

Surely, the situation must have—fortunately—shifted completely in favor of the bears by now.
Our AH member @Tundra Tiger wrote to me that, once reaches the age of 65 (the hunter, not the bear;) ), in certain regions one is actually permitted to shoot two brown bears !!!, and no state-imposed fees are charged.
This suggests a tremendous growth in the bear population, and it strikes me as a truly commendable social initiative by your government to make hunting so affordable for locals—and especially for retirees.

Meanwhile, non-residents—faced with your hunting fees—are liable to suffer a stroke or heart attack just reading about it!
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Greetings from Tyrol—the other side of the world!

Some good reading which will answer many of your questions: Alaska brown bear regulations
Synopsis: brown bear hunting is common throughout the state, 1/year, residents over 60 get free licenses. Yes, Alaska is worth visiting even if you're not hunting. Spectacular scenery and a completely different lifestyle from the lower 48. (I lived there 6 years--others here are still there and can answer more questions).

Large scale logging in SE Alaska ended in the very early 90's. Even then it was a fraction of what was going on in the earlier days.

To answer your questions:

Yes.
Yes.
Average ABC Islands harvest is around 120.
Absolutely yes. Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area on Admiralty is popular. There are many other places to see bears as well.
Game units vary in terms of regulations. Some allow 4 regulatory years between licenses, some areas every year. Alaska is a confusing and highly regulated state in terms of game laws.

I have zero idea about brown bears in other parts of the state, but in GMU 17, residents are allowed 2 per year, no tags or permits required. See a bear? Go ahead and shoot it if it catches your eye. And age has nothing to do with it. Your average 10 year old could kill them as legally as me.

Furthermore, the state has attempted to kill bears themselves, due to a perceived hugely negative impact on the Mulchatna caribou herd. ADFG's aerial predator control program killed 175 brown bears, five black bears and 19 wolves 2024, and started back up in 2025 but got derailed in court; I do not know the current status.

Non-residents still have to pay a small inheritance, because they are required to have a guide, and guided hunt prices are such I could have 3 PG hunts for what people pay.

I do not think NR hunts are having any sort of impact on the population, and I think the 2 bear limit has had minimal impact also, which is why the state started popping them from the air.

I wish they would kill tons of wolves .I went lsst year and there was nothing near unit 20 d 13 or near fairbanks or towards tok .They also brought in russian political refugees where i lived and wiped out everything moose caribou sheep bears grouse rabbits .They gave them $25 fines for shooting moose and caribou out of season .I lived off the land now nothing but red squirrels .I use to see 300 moose every two weeks .The ak fg is a total joke they have ruined Alaska for hunting and lots of fishing .I would hunt in a baiting area for grizzly but I did see any signs of them last year .It was like a atom bomb went off and everything was gone but russians and red squirrels .

What you're describing is really disheartening.
I always thought you had such strict laws against trespassing and poaching there...
Does that mean you have to get on a plane for at least half an hour to get away from the nearest road?

I think its way further than that like 300 miles .I use to see 250 to 300 moose in two weeks durimg hunting season in unit 20 d .There are so few moose that unless they knock down the wolves to nothing the moose and caribou will be gone as far as hunting populations .Caribou really got hit hard .They closed unit 13 for good where I use to hunt for good .I was going to move back to Alaska but there is not enough game to live off the land any more .I did it for 12 years no problem but now nothing .The alaska fg let this happen and ruined hunting in most of the state on the road system .It was 8500 for a drop moose hunt use to be 600 .

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
